Several problems with the NVX
Hi there!
I have a ReadyNAS NVX running on firmware 4.2.27.
Lately, i've started to get some issues. It all started when i decided on a new folder structure for my NAS.
I created a new shared folder and some subfolders and started moving data from the old shared folders to the new ones.
Quite instantly i started getting really slow transfer speeds, like 200 kbit/s over LAN. So moving stuff became almost impossible since it took too long.
I whent through all network settings on my router, computer and the NAS itself. I thought i got it improved somewhat as it worked at around 6 Mbit/s for a while, just to decrease to around 2 Mbit/s after about 1-2 days.
At the same time i started to get these issues i also get problems when streaming from the NAS. Low res video which have previously worked without hassle, now start freezing and is almost unplayable.
During the last days the problems have become even worse. I am unable to access the shared folders and i am also unable to access the web gui for the NAS.
As for the shared folders it started when i could not open some excel documents, then it escalated to not being able to access the shared folder at all. Lastly, i couldnt access any shared folder any more.
A for the web gui, it started with only parts of the webpage being loaded after login. I could se some background colors and some borders, but no menu, text or buttons. The page never stopped loading. Then it became worse, so after login i only got a white/blank page which never stopped loading.
So, wha to do?
When the problems started, but i still had access to the webgui, i ran the 2 possible disk checks you can run after rebooting the NAS. Both found no errors, so the disks seems OK.
I then removed one of the disks, because they contain sensitive info which i can't loose - like documents for my company and pictures of my children growing up etc etc, and reinstalled the NAS OS - but the problem remained.
I then made a factory reset. This seemed to do the trick. I could access the NAS both in explorer and via web gui. However, it had wiped my hdd clean :(
I thought everything was fine with the NAS again, so I intended to ask you guys about best procedure for how to extract my data from the hdd which i removed from the NAS. When i connect that hdd to my Win 7 computer, it does detect the drive but it cant mount it and list any files.
However, as i'm writing this i see that i no longer have access to the web gui. After logging in i only get some background colors and borders again, but the page never stops loading. So, it seems my NAS is not fixed and the problem is starting over again.
Any ideas?
Is my NAS toast?
If so, how do i rescue my data from the hdd which is now outside the NAS. I used to have 2 hdd in the NAS, so i should have a complete mirror of all the files on this drive.
I guess the NAS i UNIX based? So do i need to boot a linux dist to retrieve the files?
Any help is appreciated!

I just want to help though I have not tried this yet. I would assume that you originally have 2 disks inside your NAS. Hope this link below would help you retrieve the data from the HDD that is outside the NAS:

I am open to corrections :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you run the memory test boot menu option for a few passes?
If you reboot your NAS and can access the UI again, can you download the logs and email them to me (see the link in my sig)?
If the NVX hardware has issues and you were to get e.g. a 314 then support may be able to guide you through a procedure that may help. - NethAspirantHi again, and thank you for your replies.
Today after work, i started with the first tip of d/l:ing linux-reader.
It turns out that it could not access the partitions of the hard drive which i need to rescue data from. I only got red angry error messages.
I also rebooted the NAS to see if i could logon to the web gui, but now it's even worse then yesterday. Now, it is like before i did the factory reset. After logging in i get nothing, just a blank page which never stops loading.
I then tried to boot Lubuntu from an usb stick to see if i could access the NAS hdd that way. Sadly, the result was the same as in windows. Lubuntu can not list or mount the drive. If i start Gparted though, i can see that Lubuntu does recognise that the drive is there. However, it can not determine the file system of the disk, see screenshot below.
I've kept my hopes up pretty good until now. I work as an IT tech / CIO and have been through similar struggles before, but as long as the disk is OK the data is usually never lost. But now im starting to run out of ideas and start to get a little nervous about all the pictures and movies of family memories that i had stored on the NAS.
Any ideas on how to rescue the data is more then welcome.
As for the NAS, i guess it's toast? Or what do you think? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe software you are using may not work with md raid and/or LVM.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI can see this in your logs?:
[Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
This would suggest either RAM failure or some other hardware failure
Have you tried running the memory test boot menu option? - NethAspirantNo, i have not done the memory test.
I am at work now, but i will run it and update this thread as soon as i get home.
I appreciate the help mdgm :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredRun it for at least a few passes (unless it fails before then).
- NethAspirantOk, will do.
- NethAspirantHi again.
Tonight i've ran 3 complete iterations of the Memory Test boot option. It found no errors.
I also noticed a boot option to Test Disks, so that is currently running on the disk that is currently in the NAS. The disk test is currently at 32% and i'm going to bed, so i'll update on that again tomorrow morning (i'm at CET +1). - NethAspirantThe disk test finished, but i never got to see the result of it. As i woke up and checked the NAS the dislpay was dark. I pressed the power button to wake it but it only displays the usual info, like ip-adress. Guess the scan finished without errors?
