Shares lost

Hi,

I own a ready ReadyNas Duo (RND2110v2) for nearly 6 years.

The NAS has lost all shares, but all files are there and accessible through SSH (WinSCP).

In order to understand if this may be caused by another issue I had, I have to explain:

Recently I had some problems with accessing the NAS because it was not available on my network. It was some sort of DNS problem because I was able to ping the IP, but not the name [nas].

For few days I have attempted to solve this problem (which appeared to be more related to network - router - other than the NAS itself) with no luck. My suspitions of a problem with the router was also because I have recently updated my internet router (to a Virgin Media Super Hub 2 - Netgear VMDG485).

In order to fix the "DNS" issue I changed my new router's configurations and tried to get the help from the ISP. I have also attempted to change my NAS configuration. The configurations I have attempted to change to fix the "dns" problem on nas are in the following areas: (Network => Interfaces, Network => Global Settings, Network => DHCP).

To cut the long story short, in the end the ISP technician also could not identify the problem, but promised to get advise from someone more experienced. They never called me back, but I think the problem was related to an update to the router's firmware and it may be that they fixed. I just don't know as it started to work again as mysteriously and sudden as it stopped working.

Even though the NAS was "working again" (by working I mean I was able to ping by name) and accessible through https://nas/admin/, the shares I have mapped on Windows were not working. I tried to reapply the user permissions to the share, but none of this has worked, so eventually I gave up.

Few days later, when I tried to get back to it and have this problem sorted I learnt that my shares where no longer there when accessing through the NAS Web GUI. They just mysteriously disappeared.

I noticed that I could access the files through Windows explorer using Network Discovery On (From File Explorer => This PC => Network Locations => nas: ReadyNas Duo). So, Windows can browse the files that way, but it isn't the same as a mapped drive.

Does anyone have any idea of what may have caused the mysterious lost of shares and how do I map them back to the original folders?

Just for clarification again: The folders are there intact as they were before the shares disappeared.

Thanks in advance for your help

Leo

  • You have a full OS partition (/dev/hdc1)

Can you check to see how much space is used in /var/logs

If I am understanding you correctly, I am thinking your shares are not lost, just that your mapped drives on the PC aren't working.

If you open Windows File Explorer and enter \\nasname\sharename do you see the share contents?

What happens if you enter \\nasipaddress\sharename?  You can find the nasipaddress from https://nasname/admin

Also what firmware is running on the NAS?

      Hi StephenB,

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

No, it is really the shares I am talking about, not the mapping on Windows. Sorry if my explanation was confusing. Also, the DNS problem have been resolved, but I had to mention about it just because it was the first symptom when I started to have problems with the nas. Even though, I did try accessing by IP too, but it certainly is not the issue as I can normally access it from https://nas/admin (the nas name is 'nas').

In answer to your question, just to confirm what I just said, if trying to access, for example one of the shares which is still a valid folder on nas (\\192.168.0.2\media), the system replies:

      [Window Title] Network Error

[Main Instruction] Windows cannot access \\192.168.0.2\media

[Content] Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

      [V] See details [Diagnose] [Cancel]

      [Expanded Information]
      Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found.

I will post here some printscreens from the RAIDiator Web Interface (4.1.14), so you can see and confirm what I just said.

Unfortunatelly it is not showing the firmware version. I used to be able to see the current version when going to System => Update (this is another odd issue). I am also sending the printscreen for this and I am happy to try to find this information from other means if there is a way to find out other than accessing System/Update, please let me know. I can tell, however, it is the latest version. I've always kept it up-to-date, but I have not received any update from a long time.

      Thanks

      Leo

It appears you have SSH enabled?

If so, can you post the output of:

        # df -h
        # df -i
  • Ahh ok, I thought that could be the case. So in that case it means that I won't be able unless I install the add on that allows root access, but if that module is installed Netgear may offer no support, right?

Not sure how you were able to SSH in not as the root user. If you SSH in by any method then we may deny support. It is at our discretion, but generally this would be if we suspect the problem is related to misuse of SSH.

I think you can ignroe the error messages about that presence file.
