Since Windows 11 Update, Unable to Access RNDuoV2.0 Dashboard/Admin Screen

Dear Forum Members

It's been a good while since I have been on this forum, about March 2023, and as you can imagine I have run into some technical problems that I cannot work out for myself and would be grateful for any help or advice that maybe passed my way.

But first, my equipment:

4 x ReadyNAS Duo v2 running firmware 5.3.13 (including 1 failing RNDuo v2)

1 x ReadyNAS RN102 running firmware 6.10.10

1 x ReadyNAS RN104 running firmware 6.10.10

1 x PC running Windows 11 Pro

Problem 1) I believe that ever since my Win11 O/S was upgraded, with a minor patch or fix, I have been unable to access my RNDuo v2's dashboard/admin screens.

Back in March 2023, I could access my RNDuo v2's admin screens by installing the Apache2_2.2.34-arm-0.0.1.bin utility on all my V2's. However lately, I have totally lost this “admin access” facility, despite trying all of my five browsers, i.e. Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Edge and AVG.

I can still access the admin screens of my RN102 and RN104 without any problems, apart from the initial warning screens.

So I was wondering, is there a windows app/utility or setting that will allow me to regain access to my V2's admin screens.

Problem 2) One of my RNDuo v2's has a partial failure, I think the internal network card is having problems because no other device on my network can communicate with this device anymore, even though it can still be seen by but not accessed by RAIDar v6.0.

I was wondering which one the following two solutions would stand the most chance of success:

a) Connect an external HD to the front USB2.0 socket and backup all my data to the ex HD, with the hope that I can stream that data to one of my other RN devices.

b) Try to buy another RNDuoV2.0 (which are now extremely rare) and put the two WD Red Plus HDs, currently in the failing V2, in the new V2.

Nevertheless, I am willing to try any other solution that forum members can think of, rather than use my own cumbersome ideas.

Problem 3) Which is not really a problem but a search for some extra knowledge, I have just installed two 4TB WD Red Plus HDs in my RN104, both disks are now formatted and running as Raid 1.

What will happen if and when I add two more (unformatted/unused) WD Reds to my RN104?

Eagerly awaiting replies

What error are you getting when you try to access the web ui?

Have you tried disabling antivirus (and any internet security software) running on the PC?

Is the IP address of this NAS in the range of your LAN subnet?

    If you are using XRAID:

    • If you add two 4 TB drives, then the volume would be converted to RAID-5 and expand from 4 TB (~3.64 TiB) to 12 TB (~10.91 TiB).  Note you could just add one 4 TB drive and expand to 8 TB (~7.27 TiB).
    • If you add two larger disks (of the same size), then the capacity rule is "sum the disks and subtract the largest"  So if you added two 8 TB, the capacity would grow to 16 TB.  In this scenario, you would need to add two larger drives in order for the NAS to use all the space on the disks.
    • If you add smaller disks, the NAS will ignore them.

      Hi StephenB

Guess what, I was half way through writing my answers to your queries yesterday when my Internet connection went down. Luckily, I found the problem, the main internal telephone cable failed, and so I replaced it with a new one.

      Now on with my reply.

Thanks for your reply, I will try to answer your questions as best I can:

You asked, in reply to my Problem 1)

What error are you getting when you try to access the web ui?

There are no errors, as such, just all my browsers are timing out.

Have you tried disabling antivirus (and any internet security software) running on the PC?

No, I've not disabled my Internet Security Software because I've not needed to before but I will try it now that you have suggested it. However, my RN102 and RN104 can still be accessed as before, i.e. no change.

You also asked, in reply to my Problem 2)

Is the IP address of this NAS in the range of your LAN subnet?

Yes it is, nothing has changed on my network, my IP and subnet addresses are still the same.

As for my RN104, thanks for that info as I was not 100% sure, although I suspected it,  that the disk space would grow if I added an additional 2 x 4TB (or bigger) HDs.

Going back to the RNDuoV2.0 that partially failed, RAIDar (v.6) reports that this device is healthy, although the Admin, Browse and Locate buttons, when pressed, cannot find this device.  I now believe that I did not vet this device properly before buying it from Ebay. I guess that since I've had many successful purchases I became too blasé, let my guard down and ended up purchasing a dud.

Anyway, I've purchased an external HD, a 4TB passport from WD, and plan to see if I can backup my data from that faulty RNDuoV2.0, using the front USB socket and backup button, in order to get my info back.

BTW,  just found out that FW6.10.10, on my RN102 & 104, has locked certain features in place, i.e. I cannot upgrade plex, either automatically or manually, I'm stuck at version 1.11.3.4803. Nor can I downgrade the FW back to 6.10.9. where the updating facilities still existed.

Maybe I've got this wrong but until I can get my RN102 & RN104 working properly, i.e. do what I need them to do, I'm somewhat stuck.

      My ReadyNAS adventures continue.

      Cheers in advance

You should be able to downgrade to 6.10.9.  What error are you getting when you try?

Note there is a workaround for plex.  You can upload and install the deb file as if it were a firmware update.

That said, you should also apply the modifications in post 37 here:

This will need to be re-applied after every firmware update and likely after every OS reinstall.  This mod isn't needed immediately, but if a plex update requires a new linux library, it will without this.

Can  you ping the NAS IP address?

Have you tried https://nas-ip-address/admin (using the real IP address)?  Or just used RAIDar?

Your solution works, I managed to temporarily switch off my AVG Internet Security application and I found, to my amazement, that I could now re-access my RNDuoV2.0's dashboards again.

      Cheers StephenB

Here is my advise on this one:  With the units off, switch the drives from this DuoV2 into another that works.  If the problem goes away, then it is the hardware that's the issue.  If it doesn't, then it's something in the OS.

If the problem is cleared up, use the opportunity to back up the contents to an external drive.  Then consider your options.  Buying a used DuoV2 is somewhat risky, as they are quite old.  You also need to carefully look at anything listed as a "Duo V2", as most are really V1's.  Buying another brand of NAS as a replacement, perhaps large enough to replace several of your NAS, is likely going to be a better path.

When you make the backup, consider using NTFS as the drive format, then you don't need to connect it to another NAS to restore the data, you can do so from a PC if you want to.

      Hi Sandshark

I like your suggestions, and you are quite right, the RNDuoV2's are quite old and it is very difficult, probably now impossible, to find one in good working condition.  You see, I have been lucky in the past by buying 2 x RNDuoV2's, on separate occasions, that were bought but never used by their original owners, I'm guessing that these owners found the RNDuoV2's were too difficult to set up and use.

BTW, I also managed to buy a totally unused RN102, also an old device.

Anyway, as mentioned in a previous post in this thread, I became blasé when buying this last (which turns out to be faulty) RNDuoV2 from Ebay (UK), I ignored many red flags, such as the seller not showing this device in it's entirety.

However, as I said, I like your suggestion and I will try to buy and use another RNDuoV2.

      Thanks

      UK Bob

That is a good test.  Make sure the units are off when you swap the disks.  If you haven't done this already, I suggest labeling them with the NAS and slot number as you remove them.  That will eliminate any chance of losing track of what does where.

My guess is that will it will be the OS.

How long has the v2 had this problem?  Also, what errors are you seeing when you try to connect?

FWIW, neither of these are guaranteed to work.  Hopefully we can figure out what's wrong, and find a good fix.

Hi Forum Members StephenB & Sandshark

        1) StephenB

Once I installed Plex 1.41, thanks to your solution, both my RN102 and RN104 started to behave as expected, apart from one small issue on the RN104, I can now add to my plex databases without problems.

        2) Sandshark

As per your suggestion, I plan to look for another RNDuoV2.0, hopefully one that is either unused or lightly used.  You see, I've found that although the RNDuoV2.0 is a very good product a lot of NAS users found it difficult to get to grips with and so put them away in cupboards and forgot about them. It is one of these forgotten RNDuoV2.0's that I am hoping to purchase.

I'll let you know how I get on.
