Snapshot on volume C was invalidated / The on-line filesyste

---Is this error something that I need to be concerned about? Did I loose any data when this happened?
---I don't remember turning on Snapshot Schedule. Is snapshot something that ReadyNAS does internally as well?
---Snapshot schedule is still off, but when I look at disk space utilization I see "Additional 10 GB reserved for snapshots".
---This is something that I cannot edit or change, so I am assuming it is what was invalidated and removed. My question still remains:
---did I loose or is there a chance or loosing data when below happens? Also, why was it removed when my NAS still has 1TB free?
---All I was doing - copying files from one share to another and none of those shares have any disk space restrictions.

Sun Aug 28 01:02:53 CDT 2011 Snapshot on volume C was invalidated and has been removed due to reserve space being completely used..

---I get this error at least 1x monthly. Every time I restart my ReadyNAS it doesn't find anything wrong with it.
---Is this something that I need to be concerned about.
Sun Aug 28 01:01:53 CDT 2011 The on-line filesystem consistency check detected problems with your data volume. Please reboot the system with the volume scan checkbox enabled to do a full filesystem consistency check and repair.

Thanks.

  • When setting up your Readynas there has been an option to set aside some space for snapshots. Looks like you've done that and gave it 10 gigabytes for storing snapshots. Not using snapshots myself I have to guess here but I assume there is some task running on your Readynas that is actually doing snapshots. And since the space reserved for snapshots was/is running out the Readynas will delete the oldest snapshots to make room for the new ones.
So essentially you shouldn't have lost any of your live data but of course some of the older snapshot data. But since you seem to be not actively using that feature I'd say there's been no harm to your data. You should however look into where the snapshot is configured and what it is backing up because normally these settings aren't configured without reason.

The Online Filesystem Consistency Check works off a snapshot of your data. Take a look at the schedule for this under Volumes > Volume Settings > Volume Maintenance > Online File system Consistency Check. Try to set a schedule so that the check will run when you are making no/minimal writes to the NAS (e.g. run the check at night when you're asleep an hour before your backup jobs start, or schedule it to run when you're out at work). I recommend running the Online File system Consistency Check weekly.

Thanks. It would be nice if the error gave some indication of this.

I manually shut my NAS down last night, and got this error some time after powering it up this morning.

At least now I know what it means and I just need to remember to leave the NAS on when I've scheduled the check. :)
