Snow Leopard and AFP issue NV+ 4.1.8

Hi all. I started having general problems with AFP in the last couple of weeks. I have an NV+ running 4.1.8. I upgraded it to that last week, in the hope that it would resolve the AFP problem first noticed a couple weeks ago when the NV+ was still running 4.1.7. The NV+ had been running 4.1.7 for quite some time without problem. On the LAN, I had recently replaced a WAP (a wifi router that is only configured as a WAP) which connects to an Airport Extreme that I use as my router. I had considered that the problem began with that WAP replacement.

I have two Mac Laptops, both running OS X 10.6.8. There is also a Mac Pro. They can all see each other via AFP.

I have tried a few ways to correct this, so bear in mind that I am only reporting the current symptoms, which have changed while trying to isolate.

In the Finder, I can see the NV+ in the Shared section of the Sidebar, as both CIFS and AFP. However, when I try to connect via either AFP or CIFS, it reports that "Connection Failed". It then disappears from the Shared section. When I try by using Apple-K (Go>Connect to Server) for an AFP connection, afp://nas-100/media, it now asks me for my credentials, which it never did in the past. When I try using Apple-K for a CIFS connection, smb://nas-100/media, it works, and quickly. For reference, my Security Mode is Share.
iTunes reacts the same way as when I try to connect in the Finder by clicking on the "nas-100 (AFP)": I select the NV+ streaming service, "Itunes Server", from the Shared section in the itunes sidebar.

On an 802.11n (270Mb transmit rate) connection, I'm seeing a peak of approximately 7.4MBps. Jumbo frames are currently enabled, and it's a Gig connection from NAS to Airport Extreme.

I believe that Bonjour is advertising properly, however, the AFP isn't working properly. In addition, on the Mac machines, iTunes streaming seems to be flakey too, as it sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. On my Windows 7 machine, iTunes streaming seems to work without a problem.

Some of the steps I've tried:

  • trying AFP fileshare, wired connection through unmanaged switch that the NV+ also plugs into, bypassing routing & WLAN - fail

  • clearing cache - finder fail, itunes success

  • disable jumbo frames on NV+ (reboot NV+) - fail

  • re-enable jumbo frames, disable AFP reboot NV+, reboot AFP - fail

  • disable ipv6 on macbook pro - fail

I hope that this provides enough for some tips.

thanks,
Keith

  • Does anyone have an opinion on the pros and cons of going backward to 4.1.7?

    thanks,
    Keith
  • I haven't connected directly to the NAS, the closest I've come is using a wired connection through a switch. The switch is an SMC SMC8508T, which is unmanaged. The Layer 3 router that I'm using is an Airport Extreme 802.11n (2nd Generation), which is currently running the 7.6 firmware. I specify because I have a Wifi router that I use strictly as a WAP. That is, it's on the same subnet as the LAN behind the Airport Extreme, and performs no routing. I have tried two routers in this capacity, with the same issues.

Since I'm currently not supporting any Lion clients, going back to 4.1.7 feels like the easiest solution to this problem.

  • I finally decided to replace the firmware. Since the problem first appeared while using firmware 4.1.7, I decided to try the 4.1.9-T2 beta firmware, and on reboot, I have been able to use AFP. Also, iTunes is now able to connect to the built-in streaming server.

I'll monitor for the next several days and report again on my level of success.

  • I just purchased a NV+ and loaded it up and I cannot access any share folders. The NAS is connected via Ethernet to a dumb switch and my iMac running OSX 10.6.8 is connected to my switch via Ethernet. I can see the shared folder when connected as a guest, but I get a similar error saying "Connection failed" and then something about the item it refers too not being there. So i decided to try and connect as the "admin" user and now I can see only the "home" directory and I can copy files to and from that, but my other share directory "media" is not even displayed anymore.

Seriously considering returning this Netgear and buying a Thecus. I have set a few of them up over time and they all work perfectly. I setup a ReadyNAS Duo just a week ago and it works perfectly as well. So I am stumped as to how I can setup other Netgear NAS units but this one won't work, almost rules out user error.

Any ideas on how to resolve would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Ben.

What Security mode are you using under Security > Security Mode in Frontview?

What version of RAIDiator are you running?

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Hello,

Thank you for the prompt response. I am using "Share" as the security modem and RAIDiator 4.1.7.

I think I just managed to get it working. Not quite sure what changes have made the difference though. I basically nuked the config one bit at a time and started again using the same setup and it now seems to be working. I am just thankful that it was void of data, I would hate to have the same problem if my data were on it. Not that it will help the OP, but I think it was when I nuked all of my shares and set them up again that it started working again.

    Thank you for the welcome.

    Cheers,
    Ben.
  • Thanks for the heads up. Strange that it is working for me on Share mode at present. If it plays up I will be sure to convert it.

Thank you again for your assistance.

    Ben.
  • As it turns out, things are occasionally better. Sometimes I can use the filesystem over AFP. Rarely, I or my wife see the Time Machine "disk", but so far, it doesn't let us perform a backup. Nuts.
