Squeezebox Media Server and AirPlay?
Hi all,
I wish to use airplay on my squeezebox devices via the squeezebox media server (multi room purpose).
Can one of you point me in the right direction? I'm new to the whole NAS thing but not afraid to fiddle with it.
One way seems to be a plugin called ShairPort - any experiences and/or good guides?
Kr,
Niller

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOk, I think I got it now.
I think you would need airplay to get this to work. The approach in the blog might work, but it would likely require a fair amount of experimentation/debugging. - KnakkerAspirantHow I did this:
I have the ReadyNAS Pro. On that I've installed the Logitech Media Server software (http://mysqueezebox.com/download). Within this media server you have the option to install a Spotify App. Via the Server settings (in your browser window), you go to the 'Server settings' > 'Plugins' menu. In there you see a full list of available plugins. Leave all active (as is). Make sure you disable the official Spotify plugin. this one never worked on my side. Instead of this, activate "triode' Spotify plugin. When done, 'save settings'. After this, go to 'Server settings' > 'Spotify'. Just fill out your username and password and you're up!
How to 'aiplay' now? Make sure your Squeeze devices are set up and connected to your NAS (NAS as a source, not mysquezzebox.com as a source).
On your iphone/ipad, install the 'Logitech Squeezebox Controller' (https://itunes.apple.com/nl/app/logitec ... ?l=en&mt=8). After installing, in the Logitech app you have the option to 'My Apps'. In there you select Spotify. You can access all your playlists, all the music and so on, on your Spotify account. Press play and your Logitech Media Server stream spotify it form the server to your Squeeze players.
Rock 'n Roll ;-) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI think the original question was to play a streaming service that was not supported by a LMS plug-on - that was why there was a need to directly connect the server up with Airplay.
Your approach is much cleaner of course. - Raffe1AspirantHi all,
I have a somewhat related question. I use my Readynas NVX as a file server in the basement. Currently I use Winamp on my PC laptop to play back files from the NAS, which I then stream with Airfoil from the PC to my Yamaha network receiver, using the Airplay protocol. Works fine, and sometimes I stream Spotify the same way to the receiver.
Anyhow, I have this idea that I would prefer if could stream directly from the NAS to the Yamaha, using the PC only to access the streaming app on the NAS in order to create playlists or enqueue mp3 files. It's not such a big change versus what I am doing today, but I find my current setup a bit unnecessarily complicated in regards that the PC needs to run while I am listening to music. Not sure I have explained this accurately...
When I last checked there were some technical constraints prohibiting streaming directly from the NAS to the receiver in the Airplay protocol. Even if there was a solution, the change would only make sense if there was a good UI allowing me to access the streaming app on the NAS from the PC, tablet and/or mobile phone. I know that I can play back the mp3 files on the NAS directly from the receiver, but the UI is pretty crappy as I cannot add single files or folders to a playlist, so I am limited to playing single files, single folders or pre-set playlists.
Anyone an idea how this could be solved? - Raffe1AspirantHi all,
please let me know if this has been answered before, I couldn't find a reference of it.
Must say I am a little confused by all the different applications, not sure I understand what Squeezebox is used for?
Raffe - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSqueezebox is a digital music server originally built by Logitech. It's for Logitech squeezebox players, though you can use if with a couple of other players. Logitech discontinued it 2 years ago.

So if you don't have a squeezebox player, then you can ignore that one.
If what you really want to know is "can I stream directly from the NAS directly to my apple TV, iphone, or ipad with airplay", then the answer to that is unfortunately no. Apply keeps the airplay service locked down, so you need Apple itunes to do that. You can export the iTunes library to a real itunes install (accessing it from a Mac or PC). But none of the linux servers can support "home sharing", which is needed to directly access the servers from an iDevice.
You can access your music and videos with third party apps, though the best ones are paid (and there aren't any that work on the apple TV).
You can also store the media on the NAS, but run iTunes itself on a PC or Mac - then airplay, etc all work whenever the PC is on and iTunes is running. - Raffe1AspirantThanks very much for that, really appreciated.

Using a remote app I would say you can stream directly from readynas (OS6) to Apple tv or airport express. See my post here:

In any event, most people want playback on the their iphone or ipad, and unfortunately apple remote doesn't help for that. - grimlochAspirant

Install an airplay speaker app on your device and it's possible. AirBubble for android works well, and I think airfoil speakers for iOS will get the job done.
Once the app is running it will be seen by the readynas iTunes server and you can select it as a speaker to send audio[emoji4]
The toughest part of the whole process is pairing the remote apps using a text file with .remote extension. Usually takes a few tries, possibly starting/stopping the iTunes server, but I've successfully paired the iOS remote app, and Retune and Remote For iTunes android apps. Your device name that's broadcasted changes from app to app so you can use iTunes desktop version to see what the actual name is , and use that name in the first line of the .remote text file.
