Sync 2 NAS over the internet

Hi Everyone,

I have the following question:
My friend and I have the same NetGear NAS. We want sync both NAS for specific folders(visa versa) over the internet.

Can someone tell me how we can do that in a fast and simple way?

Regards

  • I am thinking more in minutes than days. Speed is not the issue. I am thinking right now of a solution like:
    A. Nas 1 has a folder where files which need to be copied to Nas 2. The folder on Nas 2 can be named e.g. folder Nas1.
    B. Nas 2 has a folder where files which need to be copied to Nas 1. The folder on Nas 1 can be named e.g. folder Nas2.

This could solve the problem of copying files with the same name(which one can look at later).
So what i want in this situation is not a sync but a copy of files.
All of this need to go automatically(perhaps a script).

    Regards

Yes, that you can do - it is what I suggested up above. The shortest frontview backup scheduling interval is 4 hours.

You would set up two rsync backup jobs, one for A and the other for B. It would be simplest to create the backup jobs on the same NAS. The remote system needs to have port 873 forwarded in the router to its NAS. ddns addresses are also recommended.

One negative is that the NV+ doesn't support rsync over ssh, so the transfers are not encrypted.
  • Hi Stephen,

Thanks. Is there a way to shorten the interval time in minutes?

If you are sticking with Frontview, the smallest interval in the pull-down is 4 hours.

Is it possible with Rsync? or other products?
If the "it" means more frequent backups, the 4 hour minimum is built into frontview for all backup jobs.

One can go in with ssh, and create custom stuff that runs at any frequency you want. That might require more linux skills than you have.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to ensure that the previous backup has actually completed before you try to start a new one.

Personally I am wondering if you really need this to be automatic. The direct approach would be to use something like filezilla to simply manually upload new stuff onto the remote NAS as it is created.
