Time Machine using OSX Mavericks

Update: Please check you are running new enough firmware first: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=409701#p409701

Hello there,

I have a Macbook Air running OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) backing with Time Machine to my Readynas Ultra (x86). Everything works, no issues. I also have a development laptop running the latest developer build of Mavericks (dp8) and on this machine, I can't get Time Machine to work. The laptop sees the Time Machine shares over AFP and I can browse the entire contents of the Readynas through Finder. When I open the Time Machine application and hit "select disk," it recognizes the ReadyNas Time Machine share and offers it as a backup option. But when I click the share, it says "connecting" and then I get the following error message: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'XYZ.' The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."

Any thoughts?

Does anyone out there have a Mavericks machine backing up through Time Machine to an x86 ReadyNas?

  • Apologies if this has been covered before. I can only find issues with people trying to back up to Time Machine. I'm trying to restore/backup from Time Machine.
My MacBook Pro was stolen and I now have a new one running:

    Maverick 10.9.1

    and:

    Ultra 4 with Raidiator 4.2.25

I'm a complete IT novice. So please bare with me! My finder can see and access the Nas. RAIDar can see and access the Nas.

When using Migration Assistant the Nas is visible, but when I enter the log in details it appears to accept them, but then do nothing.
When accessing Time Machine the Nas is visible, but when I attempt to log in I get the following:

"Time Machine can’t access the backup disk “ReadyNAS.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)"

Can anyone please tell me what else I need to do. Thanks in advance.
  • A quick guess: You are using your share access username and not the one from the Backup->TimeMachine page on frontview. Been there, done that.

We've got a set of new releases coming out soon to address this. There are now RC releases available for 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 6.1.x firmware (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=54).

Hi. Asking for help here please. I upgraded my f/w on RN Duo to 4.1.13 after I found that the upgrade to Mavericks broke my TM backup.

I tried what I have read and understood on this forum but to no avail. When I go to backup it TM menu tells me it's finding disk; preparing backup; backup failed - Check that “nas-xx-xx-xx” is available or select a new disk.

I have turned Time Machine support on and off in Front View; have rebooted RN Duo; changed disk to use for backup; all to no avail.

10.9.2 on my MB Pro 2011; 4.1.13 on RN Duo.

    Any ideas?

    S.
  • I seem to be having a similar problem with OSX Mavericks and ReadyNAS DUO (V1). Details are:

    OSX 10.9.2
    ReadyNAS 4.1.13
    Wired network at 1Gbps

Whenever I backup I get the following in the OSX eventlog:

    2014/03/24 6:07:30,512 PM com.apple.backupd[20758]: Starting manual backup

Stopping/Starting/Rebooting the ReadyNAS has not helped. Ditto OSX. Last backup now >1month ago.

From reading the forum other than the latest firmware, I don't see any suggestions, but hopefully someone has an idea?

    Thanks very much.

Hi Skywalker - thanks for your reply and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I clicked on your link and yes there are 3 entries in Finder:

    AFP on nas xx-xx-xx
    nas xx-xx-xx
    nas xx-xx-xx (CIFS)

As mentioned I have tried the other "fixes" that understood from this thread but nada. Any pointers from the above?

    Thanks.
  • Well, not sure what happened but I applied the 2014-002 Security Update and restarted my MBP and now TM has completed a full backup and continued backups with no issue.
  • The next time an update boinks my TM backup to my ReadNAS, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna stop using the NAS completely and try to move to OS X Server with an attached HDD. :-(
  • Has anyone found a fix for this. I can get the backup to work for two days if I reset the share access but it continues to eventually run into this problem. If you are still having this problem there is a temp fix. Go into OS6 and disable time machine and re-enable it. Go through and setup time machine again and it will work for a bit as long as the Mac is plugged in and on Wi-Fi.
