- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat disks do you currently have installed?
What disks and capacity were installed when you last did a factory reset?
If you want a larger volume than 16TB you would have to do a factory reset with the drives in place.
Please take a look at our compatibility list: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641 (Select Legacy, then Ultra 6). - norbert1Aspirant4x2tb right now and last factory reset was done with that setup. I want to install 2 more either 3tb or 4tb.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced User4x2TB gives you approximately a 6 TB data volume with single redundancy. You can expand to about 14 TB (the 8 TiB growth limit is the constraint).
So 4x4TB should be fine (it adds 6 TB, which is less than 8 TiB). 4x5TB or larger would require a factory reset.
If your firmware is not up to date, you should update that first. Very old firmware was limited to 2 TB drives. - norbert1Aspirantso if I keep my 4x2tb and add 2x3tb i should be fine?
At this point i dont want to reset my box but i want more space.
thanks again - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSorry, forgot this was an ultra 6.
Yes, you should be able to add 2x3TB into the two empty slots. That will give you 5 TB more space (assuming you are running xraid with single redundancy - the default). I'd hot-insert one, wait for it to expand the volume by 2 TB, then hot-insert the second. The second should have the volume first expand "horizontally" by 2 TB, then it will expand "vertically" to get the last TB. You may need to reboot to get the vertical expansion to start.
Each disk should take approx. 12 hours.
It's always good to make a backup first. - norbert1Aspiranti checked my box and i have x-raid2, does it make any difference?
Also i noticed that 4tb drives and reasonably priced now, can I use 4tb instead of 3tb without resetting the box?
Thank you - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
xraid2 is fine.norbert wrote: i checked my box and i have x-raid2, does it make any difference?

Thank you
Adding 2x4TB is an option, and will give you 6 TB of more space. If you are still under warranty it could be an issue, since Netgear will deny support if you stray from the HCL.
