Ultra II - has it been replaced?

Hi,

Does anybody know if the ReadyNas Ultra II is still being made or has it been superceded?

A few on-line places have it marked as 'no longer available' - and it seems to have gone up a lot in price on Amazon (50% since 2011)

The ultra 2 diskless is $264 at Amazon US (at the moment).

The ultra 2 plus is getting harder to find though. At the moment the price difference between the ultra 2 plus and the pro 2 is about $3 - making the pro 2 a much better choice, given its 5 year warranty.

Noise should be similar. As the Pro 2 has a faster CPU than the Ultra 2 the CPU would likely be under less load most of the time which might mean some of the time the CPU gives off less heat and hence the fan runs slower which would mean less noise.

Note the Ultra 2 Plus and Pro 2 have the same CPU
  • Thanks mgdm -

    This was why I asked:
NETGEAR's battle with fan noise on the ReadyNASes seems to finally be over—I could hear only drive noise when the drives were running and no fan noise whatsoever, even while running performance tests. Those enterprise-class drives, however, are pretty noisy and you will hear them in a quiet home office setting.

Not that I would be using enterprise class drives.

I'm tossing up between an ultra 2 or 2 Pro as a second unit. Thoughts on pros and cons of each would be much appreciated ...

I'd go with the Pro 2 for the faster CPU, larger software feature set and 5 year warranty
  • Thanks.

Silly question but would 1TB seagate drives be hotter than the not so high ST350041AS 500GB drives?

Look up reviews for the drives you are interested in and see what they say.

In same generation drives from same manufacturer with slower RPM tend to run cooler
  • I understand about the reviews - perhaps my phrasing would haver been better 'how do I know if 1TB drives will make the readynas fan go fast' - at the moment they are barely audible (Ultra 2)'.

Both their 500 GB 11.5mm high and 1TB 25mm drives are rated at 7200 rpm - so I guess it's trial and error. WD 1TB run very much hotter.

Anyway - may I stretch my welcome on this forum and ask if this is a Por 2?http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Ready-Unified-Storage-System/dp/B004SAIC1C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3LH7FPJ0268MG&coliid=I21VCZA7GSS1EQ

    Very grateful -

    Looks like it's a Pro 2.

Well if going with WD I'd go with the new WD Red WD10EFRX. You might wish to take a look at reviews of that drive too. It isn't 7200 RPM though

I agree. The Red drives are cool, and have good performance - though they are not 7200 rpm. Check out this review: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/red ... 248-8.html

Note they did not test the 1 TB version.
