Upgrading from 3x1 TB to 3x2 TB NG NV+ v1.0

Hi,

I am quite happy with my NV+ v1. Currently it has 3 x 1TB drives installed in bays 1-3. I want to replace the 1TB Drives with 3 x 2TB drives. I understand that I can put a new 2 TB drive in slot 4, and let it initialize. Once that is done, I swap out the 1TB drive in slot 2, for a 2TB - then let it sync. Then I swap out the 1TB Drive in Slot 2, for a 2 TB - then let it sync.

Now I would have 2 TB drives in slots 1,2, and 4. In slot 3, there is a 1 TB. Can I safely remove it? Do I need it? Is it fine to have an empty spot for now in Slot 3?

Hope that makes sense.

Jeff

You should put the first 2 TB drive into slot 3, leaving slot 4 empty throughout the process.
  • StephenB is giving the right approach. If you do it the way you are thinking of, you will end up with a 4 disk raid with 1 failed disk. StephenB will have you with a 3 disk raid.
  • Ok so let me understand this correctly. I don't install anything into slot 4. Instead I swap the 1TB w/ the 2TB drive in slot 3. Then after sync start with 1, swap, then 2, swap... Correct?

If so - awesome! Thanks guys!!!!!

You got it! Doing a backup first is highly recommended.
  • Ok - What is the best way to a backup?

And.... Since you guys are so smart and great, here is a question I posted on Reddit.

I have two NAS units at home, one is for backup and one is my time machine server. I want to merge the two because of size limits. Both NAS devices have SSH access, FTP, etc.
The first NAS is a Iomega StorCenter IX2-Cloud, and the second is a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ v1.

I want to dump everything from the Iomega, to the Netgear. The Netgear hosts the time machine image, and the Iomega has 1.8 TB of photos, music, docs, backups, etc... 10 yrs of stuff....
What is the best way to achieve that task, and verify the files as they go - My wife would be <beep> if I lost her photos....

Any advice, thoughts would be great :)

You should be able to copy the Iomega data to the ReadyNAS using Frontview to schedule a backup job.

That also works for backing up the ReadyNAS. The main question there is whether you want to use USB drives[s] or if you have enough space on your PCs and the Iomega to copy stuff over over the network. Since the ReadyNAS is only used for backup, you could decide to skip that step, since you could start fresh with a new time machine image.

BTW, when did you get your NV+? If you weren't running 4.1.7 or later when you purchased it, you might want to do a factory reset instead of the resyncing. This will wipe your data, so the backup would be essential. The issue here is that the older firmware didn't use 4K sector alignment, which is needed for best performance with 2 TB drives. If you are still running < 4.1.7, you would want to update your firmware with the old drives installed, and then do the reset.

As the article above indicates, doing a factory reset with your new 2TB drives would also be faster than resyncing 3 times.

Sounds like you will need an ongoing backup strategy then, otherwise the data is vulnerable. You can keep the Iomega up and running, and use it for a backup device for the most critical data. Or use USB drives of course. Either way, Frontview backup jobs can be scheduled, so they run automatically
  • Good Morning

StephenB - Thanks for all the info. I definitely dont have an extra 2 TB on my iMac (barely 200 gig free). I purchased the ReadyNas from my brother in Oct 2011, he bought 3 from www.ncix.com, and didn't know 3TB drives wouldn't work. So I got the lucky straw to buy one :) haha. I set it up originally with 1TB drives (2 of them) and just added a third a few weeks ago. I have an extra 2TB drive now, and would like to take out the 2 x 2TB in the iomega, and put them in my Netgear (and replace the iomega with 2 x 1TB for now.) Then in the future add a fourth 2 2TB to Netgear.... ugh.

I am running 4.1.18, with X-Raid. Makes Sense about the 4k sector size. Maybe I should just buy a new 2tb drive, and start fresh with the whole setup...

    Fun :)

Thank you for the help, I will post again when I get this all sorted out :) Have a great weekend.
