Upgrading my RN104 from 6.1.9
Greetings. I received some great advice on another thread but that was quite a while ago and it is closed. And I am just now finally getting around to this upgrade.
My RN104 is on version 6.1.9 (obviously not an early adopter as it relates to my NAS!).
The advice I received was that I needed to install 6.2.5 from here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29498/~/readynas-os-version-6.2.5-(rn102-%26-rn104-onl...
From the gui, select system->settings - you'll see a manual install button. Click it, select the 6.2.5 image, and proceed from there.
Then (to be safe) install 6.4.X when .2 or .3 comes out of beta.
I have three questions. Although problems are not anticipated, one issue that seems to come up is your NAS won't boot or shutdown and you need to "reset" it. I just want to be crystal clear how I reset the OS without losing data, can someone please confirm what I need to do if I upgrade and have that issue? I am very PC literate but from a NAS standpoint, I just use it, am not into the internals...
Second question, since the 6.4.X versions have moved along since I last looked at this, am I correct that I still need to upgrade to 6.2.5 before I can upgrade to 6.4.X. I still plan to wait until 6.4.X has a version that is pretty mature and in release status.
I can't find this post but I also recall being told I should do "maintenance" on my NAS before one or both of these upgrades. I have no maintenance scheduled and have never done any maintenance on the unit. What is the recommended maintenance to do now and schedule in the future? I do not run my NAS 24X7 as it is used mostly for backup and ocassional media streaming. I figure why expose it to nasties like cryptolocker if I don't need to? Very little copy, delete, copy going on. It is mostly just copy stuff there and keep it on there. Not sure if that impacts the maintenance answer.

This is done.

Hello BJB,
Before updating to 6.4.1, please read this article: ReadyNAS OS 6.4.1: FAQ on Maintenance Firmware Release.
Factory Reset will delete all files and settings you have on the NAS. OS reinstall won't. See the boot menu's options descriptions here.
You need to have 6.2.5 before updating to 6.4.0, and you need 6.4.0 before updating to 6.4.1.

Thanks. What about my question about running maintenance?
- BJBAspirant
I tried to edit the above but could not...
I do see that when I drilled down a few links, I found a link on maintenance. I am running in mirror mode with 4 discs.
It appears that a lot hinges on whether I have "bitrot" turned on. This also seems to depend on OS and device. I am running 6.1.9 on an RN104 and AFAIK at defaults. Do I need to scrub?
It appears that balancing and defrag are advisable regardless.
Snapshots....again running at defaults. I remember trying to figure out how to identify and delete snapshots and there were issues with some firmware versions and snapshots and I basically gave up. What should I do with snapshots before upgrading. The maintenance document explains what they are but does not really recommend what to do.
Thanks,
BJB

You can update direct from 6.2.5 to any 6.4.x firmware. You don't need to go via 6.4.0.
If your volume usage is below about 80-85% you could start by running a balance after you update to 6.2.5.BJB, please send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig). You could download the logs both before and after updating to 6.2.5.

Logs are sent per your sig sending logs link.

Maintenance is really based on use case. For instance, if you load your ReadyNAS 1 time full of data, you don't need to run maintenance really ever.
If you use programs that do a lot of downloading or changing of files or bit rot protection enabled, you might want to consider doing that more frequently. I recommend no more than once a week of defrag/balance on extremely busy units but only run during periods of very low activity. If you just use it as storage, maybe once every quarter or half-year is sufficient.

Thanks for the input. I checked and since it was the default setting I do have bitrot turned on. I have limited activity on it as I mentioned (used for backup/storage. Occasional access for streaming. So I will stick with the once a quarter/half year.
