Wake-on-LAN setup - ReadyNAS Ultra2

I'd like to set up my NAS (Ultra2) in a way that I could switch it on from remote location, using Wake-On-LAN.
The NAS is behind a router that is behind a cable modem. I've enabled the option in Frontview, and now I see that the feature is somewhat enabled, because my SqueezBox wakes up the NAS if I want to browse the files on it.
What I cannot get to work, is to switch it on from outside my local network. I've tried to switch on from my home by using dedicated websites that says it sends the magic packet to my IP address (like http://wakeonlan.me/), but nothing happens. My router is configured to portforward port 7 and 9.
Do you have a suggestion in which direction I should go with the investigation? Is there a way to check if the packet is reaching the NAS? Like connecting a PC with a running Wireshark to the same router port where my NAS is? Or this won't work?

- You could change the forwarding rule in your router to point to your PC, and then test it with wireshark.
- Thanks! This is exactly what I did, and figured out that only the port forwarding was established in my router, but not the ARP for the NAS MAC addr and IP.
Now it is working fine.
But I have a general question regarding this topic: I am not sure if Ultra2 supports stg like "SecureOn" password, but in case not: is there any chance that someone can switch on my NAS accidentaly or deliberately from outside? I mean if only me who knows the MAC, then it is not possible, and the MAC cannot be intercepted outside my router, right?
Thanks! - If someone can see the traffic along the route path, then they could in principle read the magic packet (which has the ReadyNAS mac address inside). If you were to use an unsecured wifi link in a hot spot, this would certainly be possible.
I don't think that is a very big threat - the only impact is that you would use a little more electricity than you want. - Hi, I know, this thread is old, but do you think this is also working on a Ultra 2 with OS6 installed? Actually I'm trying to wake it up with the APP NAS Utils, but it's not working. iStats and stuff like that is working fine, so the setup shoudln't be the issue

First thing would be to make sure WOL is working on your local network. Usually this works best with "Send as broadcast" enabled if you're using NAS Utils.
WOL over the WAN (Internet) can be tricky depending on what your router set up supports. I usually give people the following link, which, although is specifically for DD-WRT has a lot of applicable advice:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WOL- Thank you for the link. I followed the steps, but still, the NAS Ultra2 doesn't start up. I also tried to send the packages as broadcast, as you mentioned. Port doesn't matter on the local network? I installed the legacy OS6 on the Ultra2 and ticked the WOL setting. LAN is connected via Port 1 on the back. This setup should work, shouldnt it?
Thank you:) - I've tried to check my settings. Should be correct. Anyway, WOL is not working. Do you know, wether it's an issue by the actual firmware? I use the ReadyNAS Ultra2 with OS 6.1.6..
