What is wrong?
I assume something is wrong. It must be said, that i am quite novice in the setup of NAS drives..
A few days ago i happily recieved a Netgear Readynas duo with a 1 TB harddrive preinstalled. It was quickly set up and i assumed that was good. After a few days of use, i am sadly finding myself not completely satisfied.
At first I had problems with the loading of pictures I had on the NAS, sometimes it takes a long time to open the photo and sometimes it wont open. I figured it maybe was because I was running the Bittorent at the same time.
Then I noticed that when i wanted to stream a video from the NAS to my computer it took a long time to start the video, when it was running it ran OK, for the most of the times.
I also tried to move some files between my computer and the NAS and I thought i was pretty slow.
Via the following page i have read about the performance test
http://www.readynas.com/?p=310
I figured a 3 GB file would take me all night, so i tried the drag and drop test with a 139 MB .avi file. It took me 1 minute and 15 seconds to complete the copy from my laptop to the NAS, when I should copy the file back to my laptop, my laptop said 7 minutes, at the beginning, and the transfer crashed halfway through.
I have set up the NAS with a linksys WRT54GL version 1.1, and the tests, and stated problems, have been performed wirelessly to a PC running windows 7. The only thing that i have changed in the std. setup is the activation of FTP to the use of Netgear Remote.
Is this how it should be, or am I having a problem?
It must again be stated than i am quite novice.
The reason I got the NAS was to have a central station for keeping music, photos and video, and then in the future be able to stream videos to a PS3 or some other box to the TV. I am though having second thoughts about it working fine, when I am using the NAS via my PC.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTo help isolate cause of the problem, could you try the following?:
1. Direct-connection: How to Direct Connect to your ReadyNAS using Cat5e or newer ethernet cable
2. Connecting PC via ethernet to router - jes_sAspirantYes, of course.
The direct connection showed best performance in the drag and drop test, however it seemed to be as if the ethernet connection had the most fluent loading of pictures, when viewing them in the std. windows 7 picture viewer.
The direct connection copied the small 139 MB .avi file in about 7 seconds, both ways.
The ethernet connection copied the file in from my laptop to the NAS in about 20 seconds and it copied the file back from the NAS in 13 seconds. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe speed wirelessly copying to the NAS sounds about right for Wireless G (which is what your router has). The speed copying from the NAS and the copy failing is poor. Have a read of ReadyNAS Performance Expectations
Does your laptop support wireless N? If so I'd suggest getting a new router which supports this. A wireless N router would give better range and also at same distance from new router as from old one should give better performance. - jes_sAspirantMy laptops wireles connection is called: Broadcom 4322AG 802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi Adapter
Is draft-n the same as wireless N?
So the quickest possible (wireless) connection would be to get a router with a wireless N connection, anything else? I am a bit confused about all the possible settings, full journaling, jumbo frames ect. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFor a while before the spec was finalised, a number of companies that didn't want to wait released draft-N devices. Get a wireless-N router with gigabit ethernet. Leave jumbo frames off (Jumbo Frames is only useful for writes over ethernet connections, I think) and leave journaling on default settings.
- jes_sAspirant@mdgm thx alot for the help.
Does anyone know if a router like this, D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-655 ( http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=315923 ) is compatible with the duo v1? I dont find the compatibillity list to veru thorough http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=96.. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredJust did a search and some users report it works fine: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=314263#p314263
One of them was a NV+ v1 user. The Duo v1 and NV+ v1 are very similar and if it works with one it should work with the other. - jes_sAspirantOkay, now i feel really stupid :) thx again for the help.
