What should I have done?

Hi,
I've just got a ReadyNAS pro 6, and populated it with three 3TB disks, chosen from your compatibility list. It saw the disk as 750 GB at first, but it updated its Raidiator version from your site, then it could see the full disk size.

I installed the 'Bzeet' add on, and then I couldn't open a link to Frontview. The browser just responded immediately that it was unreachable. I tried the boot menu and selected OS reinstall, but still couldn't connect. I then did a 'factory default', and everything was back to the start (except with the updated raidiator already installed).

I installed the enableRootSSH addon, and that went ok. Then tried Bzeet again. I Couldn't access Frontview again. I then did what I should have done before, and re-read Bzeet's page, and found that I should have installed mysql and php addons first. That was my fault, I was lazy and expected some sort of 'missing prerequisites' message.

I went to /etc/frontview/addons and ran the BZEET.remove script. It came up with errors about processes not running, but that was expected. I still couldn't access Frontview. I selected OS reinstall from the boot menu, and tried again, I still couldn't access Frontview, but ssh access was still ok. I could ping the server, and access the shares.

I connected a USB drive, and using ssh I copied off the data I'd put on the pro. After getting it all I did another 'factory default' install and started again.

I haven't been able to find the mysql and php addodns, so I've not tried putting bzeet on again.

My worry is, I expected an OS re-install to have cleared any errors I'd introduced, and given me a factory default installation, without losing disk data. It didn't clear addons, at least, as evidenced by the ssh access still working, as well as still not having Frontview access.

Is there a way of completely flushing all the configurations/addons etc, and getting a raw install, ready to configure, without losing data?

  • As you have found, there is not currently a way to achieve a flush of configurations and add-ons to get a "raw install" state, without losing the data. I would recommend backing up all data and configurations prior to introducing something new to the system for situations like this. With rootSSH you can access the device and make alterations, as you know, to remove things like this that cause issues, if you are familiar enough with the system.

The OS reinstall procedure corrects OS corruptions, and resets the NIC settings and the admin sign-in, and additionally clearing the logs. This will not remove or uninstall any add-ons that you have installed.
  • Would a config-backup help? and if so, is there any way of doing a config-restore from the command-line?
  • Yes, I highly recommend backing up both the Data and the configuration on the unit. Unfortunately, I cannot assist you with the SSH commands on the unit.
