Why upgrade to OS6?
Sorry if this is a silly question but there are so many threads to read and I haven't come across a simple summarisation regards the benefits of upgrading to OS6.
I have an ultra 4 plus that I use as a home Central storage for pics, docs, XBMC movie storage. I am playing with the idea of OS6. I've read about issues that have been faced and then overcome. The thread on instructions to upgrade is locked and hadn't been been updated for a few years.
Can someone:
1. Summarise the RISKS and BENEFITS of upgrading to OS6 as things standing at this moment.
2. Link me to the latest instructions please. The more idiot proof the better.
Any owners of the ultra 4 plus please feel free to reassure /dissuade me.
All help appreciated.

- NhellieVirtuosoI guess one would be the disk capacity that you can use, there is no expansion limit on OS6. One more thing is readynas replicate comes with OS6 so you wont have to buy a license for it and you can use ReadyCloud.
I should add this thread here:

The ReadyNAS OS 6 uses BTRFS (pronounced as ("Butter-FS") which has good features and benefits. Check this link: http://www.netgear.com/images/BTRFS%20o ... -76105.pdf
You may use larger storage capacity hard drives. Check the compatibility list of hard drives here for yourself between the ReadyNAS OS 6 models and the Legacy ReadyNAS models: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641

Check this forum link if you want to install OS 6 to your Ultra4 Plus: https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopi ... &start=855 - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe risk is that there is no netgear support (paid or otherwise), so you are basically on your own if anything goes wrong.
OS6 also includes free antivirus.
What benefits are particularly interesting to you? - waledAspirantThank you all for your replies.
I have had a Duo, then an ultra 2 plus, then an Ultra 4 plus over the years --> only for home use and as a database for streamers.
My interest is that there isn't a new Readynas that is worth upgrading to specwise. The 314 is not far off the ultra 4 plus.
So I thought it may be an interesting play to upgrade the FW to OS6 since it is more modern with more apps and the mentioned benefits.
I am hoping, possibly beyond hope, it may help transfer speeds, may be.
I was also little peeved that Netgear upgraded the OS fairly soon after my investment in the ultra 4 plus and don't want to pay again for a newer model anytime soon.
I've made my back up and may venture to do it tonight as seems the FW is quite settled - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe OS6 platform set is broader than the OS4 was (RN100, RN200, RN300, RN500, RN700). There is a significant price gap between the RN300 and the RN500, and between the RN500 and the RN700. Perhaps that is why there is space in the numbering. The new RN200 is clearly intended to fill the price gap between the RN100 and RN300.
I think you will find that OS6 is somewhat slower than OS4 on your ultra, especially on disk writes. btrfs is focused more on data safety than on highest performance.
What performance are you seeing on the ultra? - waledAspirant

If they were to bring in a 400 series I'd probably move to that now rather than try the upgrade. Incidentally I don't need to upgrade but upgradeitis sets in
Speeds I get using 5200 RPM HDDs hardwired for 10-15gb MKV files is about 30-45MB. some files can transfer upto 60-70MB. Not scientific I know.
But the speeds haven't affected me or the streaming I have to admit - mangroveApprenticeOS6 is generally slower than OS4, as StephenB said.
Something you may want to factor in is that there are few recovery tools available for BTRFS.
I currently run OS6 on my Ultra 4, mostly because the platform seems to get faster security patches. I can't say that there were real benefits otherwise, unless you count "slicker interface" as a pro. OS6 has been much buggier but lately that has mostly been rectified. - waledAspirantWell the update went very smoothly thanks to all the fantastic advice and resources in these forums.
I just left all the discs as they were and just followed the 3 step update.
My fan speeds are as before hovering around 1800 rpm while its rebuilding the volume data.
Temps of CPU and system are same as before.
Set up was easy although my previous static IP address didn't seem tool low the email alerts but the automatic/DCHP did.
So I set the static address at the Router level instead.
Is it necessary to create a user since I am the only one using it?
Also where to download apps?
Do I download to PC and install?
I only need Transmission - NhellieVirtuoso

Thanks. Transmission and Plex up and running.
Now to wait for rebuild before back up transfer
