Windows Security Issue accessing NV+
About a week ago I made some changes to my home network (installed uVerse Gateway). All of a sudden Windows security began asking for username and password to access my NV+ (from both my Windows 7 PC and my Windows Vista PC). I did some research and found this article (http://sphardy.com/web/readynas/how-to-migrate-to-user-security-mode/) that suggested I needed to change Security Mode to User, setup Users for the shares and change Share Advanced Options. I did all this and it now works intermittently. The problem is that every couple of days Windows security pops up again and asks for user name and password. After much more troubleshooting what I found is that the Shares Advanced Options check box that reads "Set ownership and permissions for existing files....." has become unchecked. I check it again and hit apply and, although it doesn't stay checked, after about 10 minutes waiting then Frontview informs me that share permissions have changed and yet again I have access to NV+ from my PC. Any idea why this is happening? I am running the latest version of Radiator 4.1.8. Any help much appreciated!

- solslundAspirantQuick addition: I found an article that states: Once fixed, the option “Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders…” will be unchecked – this is normal.
I am ok with this, but still frustrated that i need to recheck it so often.
Svein - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThose options clear automatically because they are actually actions, not properties of the share. That is, when you set them and hit apply, the NAS scans all files and folders in the share, and adjusts the permissions. This is a one-time event.
Usually you set the "advanced CIFS permissions" options in the CIFS tab first (for instance setting all four permissions to "read/write" there), and follow up with the set ownership stuff in the advanced options to apply those permissions to all existing files/folders in the share.
Anyway, I notice that you are setting the file owner to admin. Are you also using the admin account on your Windows 7 and Vista PCs? - solslundAspirantYes, I am using the admin account on my two PCs as well. Now that I understand that those check boxes are actions do you have any ideas why I need to perform those actions so frequently? It seems to me that it should be a one time thing not something I need to do every 24 hours.

Ok. I am not sure if your symptom is a password prompt when you first attempt to access the share, or if it is something else.solslund wrote: Yes, I am using the admin account on my two PCs as well. Assuming it is a simple password prompt when you access the share itself:- Whenever you access a share, Windows first presents the logon credentials. If it doesn't know them, it will present the logon/password you used to log into the PC. If it was told to remember them, it generally will reuse what it was told. On the ReadyNAS side, if the logon user name is configured in the ReadyNAS, the ReadyNAS needs the corresponding password. If it gets a different password, then it will deny access (even if "everyone" access is set to read/write).
The reason I said "...it generally will reuse what it was told..." is that with admin in particular there is a bug in Windows (at least in Vista 64). If the logon is admin, and you check "remember", it will work until you reboot the PC. Then it will ask again. The only way I know to work around that problem is to reset the PC admin passwords so they match the ReadyNAS.
(BTW, There is a credentials control applet, where you can try to configure NASNAME\admin as the logon for the share, I have not had any luck with it).- Log in into FrontView, navigate to the share listing and select the CIFS icon.
Scroll down until you see Advanced CIFS Permission
check the box next to Automatically set permissions on new files and folders.
Set the Group and everyone rights to "read/write" in the "When new files are created over CIFS..." section.
Set the Group and everyone rights to "read/write" in the "When new folders are created over CIFS..." section.
Click Apply.
If any of the settings were changed in the above procedure, then select the "advanced options" tab and do the ownership/permissions update one more time.
