My cable modem seems to be warm to touch and my service interruptions diminish with cooling. Also need to update the firmware.

Then let a fan blow at it. You cannot update the FW yourself, that's for the ISP to do.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
Please post a copy and paste of the modems connection status and event log page.

Hey I would love to send you that info like the event log and such but, I am slightly challenged and very frustrated at this time. I'm being told that my modem is ONCE AGAIN just out of warranty and they can't help me without charging for it. My last two Netgear cable modems suffered the same demise as this one and I'm DONE! If you can somehow guide me to the "Magic" update firmware button then please do. Otherwise I may have to wait for my techy wife to wake up and rescue me once again.

The ISP (COX) has denied it's their responsibility to maintain the firmware and updates.
