I'll start by saying I am an accomplished IT person and have multiple WiFi devices, routers, switches, etc. in my home/lab environment and have never had an issue like this crop up. My cable provider is Wave Cable, but I own the router which is on Firmware V3.01.40.
The WiFi password on my C7800 could not be reset in the normal manner. I followed the very simple instructions to reset the WiFi password and it did not work. Devices continued to reconnect using the old password and the new password did not work, but showed in the settings page where the password is set. I repeated the steps multiple times to no avail, thinking I was losing my mind I actually looked up the procedure and was exactly what I was doing. I rebooted the router a couple of times and tried again to no avail. I waited about 10-15 minutes between attempts thinking maybe it takes a while.
I power cycled the router and the new password no longer showed in the settings page so I tried applying the new password again. Still did not work. Refreshed my browser or logging out and back in had no effect.
I connected my laptop via Ethernet and repeated all the steps again multiple times. The same result every time, old password was still active and devices continued to reconnect to the router even though I [supposedly] entered the new password and clicked apply and waited...
The only thing that worked, which I was avoiding like the plague, was a factory reset of the router and re-provisioning from defaults, then I was finally able to set the WiFi password from the factory WiFi password.
Any ideas why changing the WiFi password is such an issue on this router? I've never seen behavior like this from any wifi device, is there a firmware update my cable provider should upload? At this point I just want to know why this happened and if there is a meaningful reason for it not to work as described in the documentation.
