Re: New to nighthawk ac1900
SSIDs are the two network names (for instance the one that ends in -5G)
5G is faster when you are close to the router, so it's usually the best choice when you see it.
Both work, so there's no worries if the one that doesn't end with -5G is the only option.

They will get faster speeds if you do. But the distance 5G reaches is shorter.
If you have an R7000 you can turn on the smartconnect feature. Then the -5G will go away (only one network name will appear), and the devices+router will pick the one the like best. So you could try that.
If you don't have an R7000 let us know what you do have.

Re: New to nighthawk ac1900
There should be TWO different SSID's on the ROUTER unless SMART CONNECT is enabled, then they are the same (both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz SSID) with the same passphrase.
From the Router homepage click on WIRELESS on the left side and you'll see all that info.
Speeds are determined by the ISP as far as Down/Up load speeds. Connection speeds are determined by the network adapter in the devices.
More than likely the DVD is only a single speed device and it would then ONLY show the 2.4Ghz SSiD. Meanwhile the iPhone is a dual-band device and it will see both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz SSID.
They will both provide the SAME Internet and LAN access speeds, but the major difference is the SIGNAL STRENGTH the further away you are from the router, and the distance the from the router the signal can be seen. In General the 5Ghz SSID will be stronger closeby but will not reach as far as the 2.4Ghz.
