c7800 wifi issue

Alright, I really don't know why this website keeps blocking my discussion post. I've tried to post the same post six times but the system never publishes it. so let's try if this works.

I have had issues with my C7800 with its low speed. I get a full speed with ethernet but significantly less speed when I use wireless.

Can anyone please leave any comment here below so that I can give you more details? it seems like whenever I include all the details in this initial discussion, the system automatically blocks it and never publishes it.

Thank you

Re: c7800 wifi issue

So it seems like my question has finally been published!

Anyone please leave a comment and I will provide you with full detailed information about what I have and what I've done. I don't know what community regulation I was violating with my initial post, but whenever I included all the details in my initial post, the system automatically blocks my post and never published it.

So please ask me any question or clarification and help me out resolve my problem..!

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Wireless AC speed won't get you gigabit speeds.

As well as link speed is different from throughput. the general rule of thumb is that throughput (actual speed) is roughly 55% of what link speed is. With most phones/tablets/pc's only having an 1x1 or 2x2 antenna, they usually have a link speed of 433mbps or 867mbps. Which puts their rough speed at 250-500mbps max under optimal conditions.

Keep in mind those are rough average as some devices are more efficient and some are less. and that's over 5ghz. 2.4ghz is significanly slower than 5ghz.

What issues are you having?

What device are you using?

What speeds are you getting?

Over 5ghz?

Over 2.4ghz?

Are there many wireless signals in the area that can cause interference?

What is your home materials made of? this impacts it as well as many materials can block wifi

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Thank you for the response, and here's the details!

Testing device: 2019 16inch Macbook Pro (equipped with 802.11ac + gigabit usb c to ethernet adapter)

Service: Comcast 1 gigabit internet

Connected device: above-mentioned Macbook pro and iPhone 7 plus

What I actually get:

- ethernet connection (850-900Mbps)

- 5G (60-220Mbps)

- 2.4G (20-90Mbps)

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Ethernet speeds are pretty much in line with what you'd expect.

same with the 2.4ghz.

5ghz could probably use a little fine tuning but its tough to tell without knowing which wireless card is in it. do you have that info?

Any other 5ghz devices you could test with?

Re: c7800 wifi issue

And this is what i've done

- troubleshooted and rebooted

- re-provisioning

- changed 2.4 ghz and 5ghz channels

- changed 2.4ghz and 5ghz max speed limits

What do you mean by wireless card?

I've tested with my iPhone 7 plus and got a similar result

Re: c7800 wifi issue

I don't know why the system keep deleting my reply whenever I post something, but I also would like to add that it seems more abnomal compared to the fact that I get better service with lower-tier and older C6300 modem-router that I have owned for 3 years now.

With C6300 I get 150-300Mbps (2.4ghz) and 350-550Mbps(5ghz). So.. it seems very problematic to me that newer and higher-end C7800 with its DOCSIS 3.1 gives less speed than older C6300 with DOCSIS 3.0...

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Hold down the option key on the mac then select the wireless icon on the top tool bar, this will show you the connection rates when you connected to the C7800. What rates are you seeing with the Mac placed about 6 feet away while connected to the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios?

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Hello!

I don't really know what connecting rate is, but this is what I get

2.4ghz

- Channel 2, (2.4ghz, 20Mhz)

- RSSI: -30dBm

- Noise: -91dBm

- Tx Rate: 216 Mbps

- PHY mode: 802.11ac

- MCS index: 0

- NSS: 0

5ghz

- Channel 149 (5ghz, 40Mhz)

- RSSI: -30dBm

- Noise: -95dBm

- Tx rate: 13Mbps

- PHY mode: 802.11ac

- MCS index: 1

- NSS: 1

Thank you..!

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Wow, This is what I see:

- Channel 2, (2.4ghz, 20Mhz) <Should be 40Mhz. You should be using channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz.

- RSSI: -30dBm

- Noise: -91dBm

- Tx Rate: 216 Mbps<Should be higher speed here for AC mode.

- PHY mode: 802.11ac

- MCS index: 0

- NSS: 0

5ghz

- Channel 149 (5ghz, 40Mhz) <Should be 40 or 80Mhz.

- RSSI: -30dBm

- Noise: -95dBm

- Tx rate: 13Mbps<Speed should be around 1300Mbps minimum for AC mode.

- PHY mode: 802.11ac

I'll drag my C7800 and see if I can connect my Mac Book Pro to it though the modem isn't being used or active on a ISP service.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Welllllllll now. Interesting development since last time I had the C7800 online.
FW is v3.0.1.40

C7800DefaultWifiSecurityDisabled.png

So connecting my Mac Book Pro 2018 OSX 10.14.6, I'm getting the same speed rates on 2.4Ghz. 195-216Mbps with 20Mhz. I see 40Mhz flucuate back and forth every so often. I'm sitting right next to the C7800 about 3-4 feet away in between. The speeds should be at least 450Mpbs I believe on 2.4Ghz if not 600 for the Mac book.

Now heres something new. Regardless of using Custom or Default SSID names and WPA2/AES or disabling Wifi security all together on 5Ghz, the Mac Book Pro will NOT connect at all to the 5Ghz radio. I don't remember having a problem when I first got this from NG, however back then I had a Mac Book Pro 2008 which I believe worked back then.

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.21.12 PM.pngScreen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.30.59 PM.png

Checking my Windows 10 PC with a D-Link DWA-192 it also won't connect to the 5ghz SSID on the C7800. 2.4Ghz works.

Windows reports it "can't connect to that network."

The DWA adapter had worked before I believe in Windows 7 which I have a capture of the speed rate back then when I started using it.

C7800_DWA192_5Ghz.png

There as been a driver update for the DWA-192 since then. It works with other NG wifi I have tested with.

Possible the C7800 FW was updated since I had it online last and it hasn't received anything since.

Would like to see if NG can review this. Having two different wifi clients not being able to connect isn't good.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Thank you so much for investigating and letting me know..!

I've tried what you told me to do, and it's quite interesting..

I've changed 2.4ghz to channel 1 but still at 20Mhz and Tx rate 210Mbps.

In the meantime, my 5ghz now gets better Tx Rate (870 - 1,170Mbps). However, this has not been realized to higher wifi speed. The speed comes at somewhere between 250 - 300 Mbps.

I really hope NG will see this and look into it..!

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Glad your able to get something connected to 5Ghz on your unit. I can't with mine for unknown reasons. Even with WPA security disabled. Not good.

What version of FW is on your unit?

Re: c7800 wifi issue

I came back to this today and wanted to see if my iPhone and Android pad would connect to the C7800 since I didn't test them yesterday.

Both iPhone and Pad connect fine to the open wifi SSIDs. I happen to check again with the D-Link DWA-192 adapter and low and behold, it connected to the 5Ghz radio. Huh? Didn't yesterday. 2.4Ghz only sees 288Mpbs. Should be at 600Mpbs since the 192 and C7800 support 600Mpbs on 2.4Ghz.

DWA192Connect24GhzOpenSSID.pngDWA192Connect5GhzOpenSSID.png

I went and grabbed the Mac Book Pro again and it too connected to the C7800. What the...

IT's connected on 5Ghz at 1170-1300Mpbs(Flucuates) on channel 153 at 80Mhz.

The only thing I did since yesterday was unplugged the C7800 from the power and left it on it's box. Wondering if there is a problem in the configuration UI that doesn't get set right after applying and the power cycle seemed to clear it.

I'll check with enabling WPA2 and AES to see everything connects with security enabled.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Ok, after enabling WPA and AES on the C7800, I can get devices connected to the 2.4Ghz radio, however nothing will connect to the 5Ghz radio at all. I notice that the 2.4Ghz LED on top blinks while devices connect. The 5Ghz radio remains solid ON when devices connect to it and never blinks. I powered OFF and back ON the C7800 and didn't fix anything. Seems like there is a problem here on 5Ghz with security enabled, at least on my C7800.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Ok so after doing a reset on the modem and setup from scratch, I can get 5Ghz devices. Odd that it needed to be reset though. Smiley Frustrated

I'm seeing 1170 to 1300Mbps on my Mac and D-Link DWA-192 on 5Ghz, however nothing much over 216Mbps on my MBP and 280Mbps on the 192 adapter when connected to 2.4Ghz. These devices support at least up to 450-600Mbps on 2.4ghz.

I'll try some more configurations to see if we can get closer to 600Mbps...

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Thank you so much for your continuing effort to resolve the issue and updating me on it.

However, I have to say that I'm more than disappointed the fact that no one from NG has responded or given any consideration to this issue.

At this point, I'm gonna call them and tell them I'm returning this device and demand for a refund.

Thanks..!

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Ok. Ya I think that at least there is a problem with wifi on the C7800. Even after a reset, i was eventually able to get 1300Mbps on 5Ghz with my Mac Book. Changing over to 2.4Ghz, only my D-Link DWA-192 adapter would see 600Mbps. While iphone and Mac book would only see 120 and just over 200Mbps respectively. Possible limiation of these devcies on iphone and Mac as I did try a D-Link DIR-882 and those same devices saw same seems on 2.4Ghz. So Probably a device limiation on those.

You might go with a Modem only option and get yourself a external router to connect to the modem, then you'll have more options and flexibility of using wifi and connecting up what you want and need. NGs CM1000,1100 are good modems. WiFi options are wide and open. Depends on what you have need for and device support. You can go with a classic wifi router or try a mesh system.

Good Luck.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Thank you for the recommendation!

Right now I will just return to my old C6300, but once the lockdown eases in, I will definitely venture the combination of modem and router (each separate) option. For sure I can get CM 1000 and then get a gigabit router. Still, I'm quite disappointed that I have to get two separate devices when there is A DEVICE that is supposed to supporting both functions but failing miserably...

Thanks!

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Set up new C 7800 and can sign in and use 2.4 but cannot sign into the 5 GHz did a bunch of restarts resets three hours on the phone with Netgear support after paying them $90 since I had it sitting on my bench for three months because I needed to wait till I can get some help so now it is out of warranty.

No matter what we did we could not sign in to 5 GHz would not accept the password. We even tried using the guest version of it and couldn’t do that either couldn’t get in.

Re: c7800 wifi issue

Even if you disabled WPA security on the 5Ghz radio, a 5Ghz wireless device would not connect while the radio was broadcasting in the open?

If so, then I would ask about an RMA.
