Any idea why my ReadyNAS Pro 6 keeps becoming excessively noisy? Does it have anything to do with rsync? I don't believe it has to do with this because the problem wasn't happening before. Also worth noting is that it revs down if I leave it alone for some time.

And here is the output after revving up again after recalibration (again, over 2000 RPM):

I see many /usr/sbin/apache-ssl -f /etc/frontview/apache/httpd.conf processes.

And here is the result after recalibrating once again through FrontView:

I see the many httpd.conf processes have gone away.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

Apparently multiple httpd.conf entries is normal. I think I might just be being paranoid. I reinstalled the latest firmware and it does seem to be a bit quieter.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

When the fan spins up, what is the output of /var/log/frontview/enclosure.log ?

Most likely the disks are reaching a temp threshold that the system wants to cool them down faster, so the fan cranks up.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

Looks like disk 3 isn't on the compatibility list.

Could you try an OS Re-install?

touch /.os_update

then reboot

What version of RAIDiator are you running?

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

I put that disk in after making this and the other posts. Would an OS Re-install ruin any of the addons, my customizations or things I installed with apt-get?

Disk 3 is a HCL drive. It a ST33000650NS but re-branded and sold by HP (with a lesser warranty, so it was cheaper). To be sure, the drive has two labels; one with the HP logo and S/N and one with a Seagate logo and S/N (where Seagate is stated as the manufacturer, and the S/N is ST33000650NS).

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

An OS Re-install may mean you need to re-install some add-ons.

Also it may break some customisations you've made via apt-get.

What version of RAIDiator are you running? Are you running 4.2.22?

Disk 3 may have custom firmware on it. If it does then that could cause compatibility issues. What does it show for the firmware of the disk if you do e.g.

smartctl --all /dev/sdX

Where X is a letter, typically a for disk 1, b for disk 2, c for disk 3 etc.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

No need to post the serial numbers. Best not to post those on a public forum.

Also as you can see the HP disk does have HP firmware on it. Now that disk may/may not be causing the fan to run fast. Some disks with custom firmware can act a bit weirdly.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

Didn't notice the serials were listed, thanks. I made the post, and heard the fan running louder than usual, before adding the HP drive. It's still being way too noisy!

I'll have to wait a couple months before I can wipe all my settings on this. Won't have time to hack through setting everything up until then. Any temporary solution would be good; can I force the fan to stay a constant speed?

I don't think you can do that and even if you can support wouldn't like that.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

Edit: Apache doesn't seem to be the issue (see next reply). The follwing reply is probably nonsense.
---
Finally had time to try the OS reinstall. Surprisingly, It *seems* fix the fan issue... until I re-install WhoCares? custom apache configs. So they are most likely the culprit. I think those httpd.conf processes are the issue after all, as they don't spawn and stay until installing the custom configs... Care to weigh in, WhoCares?
It may still be my fault... having to do with my custom virtual hosts not kicking in until installing WhoCares? configs. What's needed from me to troubleshoot this further?
For now I have to choose between a noisy office (kinda gotten used to it) or forfeiting the ability to use the NAS as an HTTP server.

Re: "Fan SYS" constantly increasing to > 2000 RPM

Killing the apache processes seems to do nothing to change the system fan speed.
I removed Plex and one or two other addons, but kept the ones I use (DnsOMatic, PHP5, and Rsnapshot)... I disabled DnsOMatic and Rsnapshot, but I couldn't disable PHP5 (grayed out). This hasn't fixed the issue.

The fan steadily increases over time (about 10 minutes before becoming obnoxious). If left alone, the fan eventually calms down. This process repeats over and over.
"Recalibrating" through Frontview brings the noisy fan down from ~2000 to ~900 in less than a minute.

Why does recalibrating work, I wonder? I'll try removing the third drive HP drive.

As a last resort, I'm thinking I could write a cron bash script that checks the fan speed, and executes a recalibration upon reaching a threshold.
