I think our FVS318N is bricked....

So we had bought several FVS devices at my place of work for testing purposes to eventually be deployed in prod. We didn't end up doing this due to limitations of the products, but we kept some around as backups for when we needed a quick & temporary device. As part of testing, I pulled out our FVS318N device.

It appears to be corrupted: even after doing a push-button reset, the device will not respond on the default LAN IP, will not obtain a DHCP address via the WAN, and will not allow logins via the serial console. Shown below is the output of the console during bootup. Notice the many messages about "input/output error", "SQUASHFS" errors and "data probably corrupt":

Secure Gateway Solution for FVS318N

FVS318N login:

The device is not even a year old..... it was bought new off of Amazon from Amazon directly (not a reseller), but I am concerned that Netgear may have given us a refurbished unit...

So what's the course of action for us? I am aware there are "lifetime hardware warranties" on Netgear products, would this qualify?

Re: I think our FVS318N is bricked....

Hi train_wreck,

It seems that you can still login to the console of this FVS318N. You may try setting it to factory default from the console then check if it will show the same thing. If it worked then you can upgrade the firmware then monitor the firewall. Just in case that you've done this already, I suggest you to open a case/chat online on NETGEAR support and also be ready with a soft copy of the Proof of Purchase or Invoice of the device for warranty verification.  If ever the device is still under warranty, an online replacement will be provided.

Regards,

Re: I think our FVS318N is bricked....

The console will not accept logins; even after performing a reset, trying to login with the factory user/password does not work. The login prompt is just cleared & reposted again and again.

I will contact RMA
