GS108E Firmware Upgrade Issues

Hi,

I recently tried to upgrade to v1.00.06 firmware on a GS108E I had purchased. However, I have been having severe problems trying to upgrade it and I fear that the 'managed' half of this managed switch is bricked.

I had initially performed the upgrade procedure, giving it the path to the v1.00.06 firmware that I downloaded from kb.netgear.com (http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17347), but the config utility simply waits for 30 seconds (with 0% progress) and ultimately times out with a dialog stating that there was a TFTP timeout.

I do not see the switch doing TFTP of any sort when I monitor it with Wireshark.

I've tried holding down the factory reset switch but that seems to do nothing (unless I'm doing it incorrectly).

The switch is now in a mode where the config utility shows it as 'GS108E*' and when I select it, the only option I have is to upload a firmware image...With the same problem after I try it.

Power cycle does not appear to help either.

Any help would be appreciated. The tech support I got on the phone wasn't too helpful and thought that perhaps the firmware on their server was/is corrupt, and perhaps it was at one point, but I don't think that a new firmware image is going to solve the problem I'm seeing now.

Thanks in advance.

Re: GS108E Firmware Upgrade Issues

Well, I'll respond to my own post 😉 After having a some rest and a fresh start, I brought it back to life. For some reason, the switch takes an ABSURDLY long time to respond to packet #1 on the TFTP transfer -- the ProSafe Plus Configuration Utility times out waiting for the ACK. I finally noticed that the switch WAS acknowledging the packets...Just after the timeout. So, I was able to manually do a TFTP transfer of the firmware myself -- it took a long time, but thankfully, it didn't take anything more than a PUT of the file and the switch took over, reflashed itself, and came back to life with v1.00.06 firmware. I'll withhold judgement why Netgear support wasn't able to tell me this and I had to mess around myself to figure it out. Heads up to anyone else experiencing similar issues. - Once in that 'GS108E*' state, the switch is simply expecting firmware. - Do a binary TFTP put from a separate window providing a path to the UNZIPPED firmware image - It will take a while, but once complete the switch will flash itself and come back to normal.

Hate to bring up an old thread.

What do you mean by doing it "from a separate window"?

I am on .06, trying to go to .09 and having this exact problem.

Re: GS108E Firmware Upgrade Issues

TFTP Time out issue here today as well. I disabled windows firewall and then it worked immediately.

I don't know why it got into this state in the first place - I did a GS116E a fews ago with no problems.

Anyway, might be easier to re-try with the firewall down - I had to configure a laptop with a ip address of 192.168.0.x to get it onto the same subnet as the dead switch anyway to get the update to take since after it was "bricked" the switch would no longer get a DHCP address.

Not what I was hoping for out of the box , but seems fine now.

This continues to be a problem. Today I flashed the GS116Ev2 but even shutting down the Firewall on Windows 8.1 still didn't help.
I installed Klever Pumpkin tftp and had to change the time-out on that to 60 seconds before it would successfully transfer.
Once transferred everything worked like clockwork.
NETGEAR: is this something that can be looked at either a) change it so it works or b) give clear instructions on how people can go about uploading it manually. I think this would benefit everyone.

Did you try using the Prosafe plus configuration utility? Do you get the same issues as mentioned above? I use the latest version of the utility to update and did not have any issues.
