Hard Drive Failure RN104
Readynas RN104 4x3TB disks (Seagates I think) RAID 5 running OS 6.10.3 and at least 1 disk has failed. Received message (can't remember exactly what now) in Raidar but heard clicking inside unit (so definitely a drive failure). Rebooted but then when I go into Raidar now, then Admin page, it brings up screen to start setting up new RAID.
The data is backed-up so not too concerned about data loss but I've like to get to the logs and understand what happened and which drives have failed.
NooB on linux but can follow instructions re SSH and required commands.

Re: Hard Drive Failure RN104
One option is to power down the NAS and test the disks with SeaTools. Label the disks by slot as you remove them.
RAIDar 6.5 should give you an option to download the NAS logs and run diagnostics. Have you tried that? The current version of RAIDar is here: https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads

Re: Hard Drive Failure RN104
Ok when I try to get logs via Raidar I get attached image - 'Healthy' status doesn't make sense. Display NAS says 'READYNAS is in safe mode'. Can hear clicking / beeping from unit.
Need to locate caddy to do Seatools drive checks. Will revert on outcome.

Re: Hard Drive Failure RN104
This is quite odd. The screen saying the NAS is in safe mode and the RAIDar status don't seem to jive at all. With that RAIDar status, you won't be able to download logs (if there even are any accessable).
The first thing is to identify the bad drive and try booting with just the others. Hopefully, the NAS will then be able to sort things out. I'm suspecting that one bad drive is creating problems across the entire SATA system.

I agree that is the right next step.

Re: Hard Drive Failure RN104
Well this is weird to say the least.
Have run both Seatools and WD diagnostic tools on the drives (1 x WD30EFRX, 1 x Seagate ST3000DM001, 2 x Toshiba MG0ACA400E) with the WD diagnostics showing no errors for SMART / Quick Test. Seatools showed no errors for all Short Generic Tests but did flag SMART errors for all drives but I couldn't work them out.
So reinserted drives and all appears in order with RAIDar showing drives all healthy and data intact.
Thanks for your help.

The short test amounts to a confidence test. You really need to run the long ones.
Perhaps download the log zip file, and post disk_info.log. Best to do a copy/paste ( using the </> tool in the forum)

Re: Hard Drive Failure RN104
Agreed. Have removed drive and running extended long tests but will look to replace anyway.
Thanks.

I'd avoid the WD30EFAX. EFAX drives between 2 and 6 TB all use SMR (larger ones do not). This created quite a stir when it came out a few months ago. WD announced they create a new "Red Plus" line in response - but they haven't yet.
Don't go with another Barracuda either - many of those models are also now SMR.
Instead, I suggest going with the older WD30EFRX (still available for reasonable prices) or get an Ironwolf.
