RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Hello People
I've been away from the forum for a long while and I'm rusty. I've purchased a RND2000-200 v2 2nd hand as my previous Nas died over a year ago and I've just not had a chance to do bugger all about it.
I've looked at the official Hardware compatible list, trying to familiarize myself with what's official etc....But I can't see "RND2000" listed in the drop down tab. Or "RND2150" etc...
What there seems to be is a "RN2120" in the drop down list.
So where would I look in the official hardware list for the "RND2000-200"?
Has it's support been discontinued?
Or I'm correct in thinking it would come under the "RN2120" tab in the drop down tab? (as it's the only thing resembling something similar)

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
It's a duo v2.
You can confirm that by checking the firmware - it should be 5.x.x.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Hi Stephen B
I knew it was a v2, I just don't know how to recognize it in the drop down tab under hard disks in the Official Hardware Compatibility List.
Lots of "RN..." numbers. Which would I choose to see what's officially compatible?
Thanks

Choose legacy devices. Then you will see the duo v2.

Thanks Stephen B.
I don't remember or know what the "legacy" means, but your answer worked.
I'm guessing "legacy" is an old model/s description etc...

Legacy = EOL (end of life). NETGEAR does not sell these anymore, and may only do maintenance firmware releases, there is no active development on it. The Duo v2 was replaced by the RN104.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Hi Chirpa
I googled "legacy" earlier tonight and it gave me a definition for computer speak, I kinda figured it out. But do appreciate the confirmation.
In regards to the RN104. I guessed it was the 102 that'd replaced the v2 simpl........gave up here and went to google the 104. I figured the 102 was 2 bay and the 104 was 4 bay, then realised I was assuming and went and googled.....
Ok....RN104 is a 4 bay. RN102 is a 2 bay.
Would you have meant the Duo v2 was replaced by the RN102, or I'm missing something here.....I'm extremely Readynas rusty, just coming back to the forum today/last night and I'm trying to brush up on stuff.
Got a v2 coming and I'm not sure if I've purchased the wrong one, done it on impulse without a bit of homework. Maybe should've gone for a newer RN102.
What does anyone think about the Duo v2 (now discontinued) up against the newer RN102, which still has some teething problems apparently.
Duo v2 still a good ride? Or should've def gone for the RN102?
And found out earlier that I can't just swap discs over from Duo sparc to the Duo v2 which I believe is x86 or something. I got some figuring out to do....
Just googled again before this post was submitted. Is the v2 Arm or x86?

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Sorry, I meant the 102. 104 is the four bay yes.
RN102 and Duo v2 are both ARM, the 3xx series is x86 CPU. The 1xx is basically a faster Duo v2, but still low powered (can't do transcoding video, etc).

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
I'm a very basic home Nas user. Backup, storing, and streaming really. So I guess I'll be ok with my impulsive buy.
Got a question though.
I got a dead Duo v1. 2 drives in it. I don't think the backup to these 2 drives was up to date. What's my strategy here?
I'm a mac user, but have been pondering this for a long while. Have also just purchased a cheap 2nd hand window vista set up so I can manage this task. If memory serves me correct, there's 3rd party software that's window not for mac that'll read the info on the discs. I can't remember off the top of my head the correct name for the Duo's preferred drive format, H something or other.
I thought I'd be able to extract maybe bay 1, stick it in an external caddy and fire it up on the windows machine to pull off the data. Am I close? Sound about right?
Considering I got this all figured out in my little head after more than a year away from dealing with this stuff......then I'm probably wrong. Would be too easy.
Let me know what you think please.

EXT3 filesystem. Disk 1 in a USB enclosure on the Windows PC with this running should get you somewhere.. http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/

I just fired up that link, and it says HFS in the listing of files systems
That's where I got the H from I guess.......now I'll figure out what HFS is sooner or later....

Yep, magic chirpa. Just had a look at the link properly.
Now that's what my little brain had remembered, but thanks for filling in the blanks.
You reckon that's the best way, only way?
Need to maybe ask this in a different forum, backup maybe? Or not necessary...

I wondered what you meant "mac file system", with EXT3 being Linux

HFS is a Mac filesystem. EXT is a Linux filesystem.
Connect that Duo v1 disk to your Vista machine and load that software. It should let you get the data from that system.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
I just got this gig going. Got some old vista machine that ain't right, with a cracked monitor from ebay....robbed. Looking for a refund.
Spent money on 2 newish V2's. But wish I'd gone for the newer models.
And I've just managed to rig everything up, and managed to be able to find and see the lost data on one of the old Nas drives, to only then to sit there and wonder......was it worth it?
God knows what life altering info I thought I'd have on there, but after spending quite a few quid on trying to save this crap......was it worth it..?
And the time it's gonna take sifting through this rubbish.
As I sit here again, losing a nights work again, I'm seriously thinking....F+ck it. Format the bloody lot and be done with it. Apart from the obvious data like photos, the rest is total crap.
Do we really hold on to such rubbish these days?
I've lived without this data for over a year, worrying about it too. This ain't business....it's just my saved rubbish, which I'll probably never look at again.....
Maybe my mate's right....he says "computers are shit, they're a waste of time". Obviously not a user.
Who knows...all I know is he ain't got this problem.

I hear ya. I used to have like 9TB of stuff, mostly rubbish. Once I trimmed the net-replaceable files, my core files are only under 1TB. So my NAS needs have shifted a lot.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Hi chirpa
I like your reply. It's good to know there's some sane people out there.
Those that can see the woods for the trees.
To navigate between real world needs and the twilight world of computer.
I stressed over this data loss for over a year, not having the time to remedy things.
This has caused me to really take a good look at this kinda behaviour. Whilst I am a computer user unlike my quoted friend, and we do need to be computer literate these days, but the question is to what extent?
If it ain't the Secret Service, money making machine and just plain business, then it's got to be scaled back.
Important documents, photos, paid for stuff ..... fine all good.
300 d/loaded films, that I'll never look at again and just store like some kind of moron. To boast to friends that "yes I do have that film", but I'll never bother to look at again, probably.
I'm guilty of being of a generation of Digital Hoarders.
I like tip tapping around on my computers, it's a hobby, challenges my little brain to get it whizzing this way and that.
But I've realised my mistakes here.
I've bought 2 V2's (don't ask, one came with 2 3TB drives), paid decent money for both. Wish I'd purchase the newer 100 range. Should've done my research before buying on a whim.
Gonna set them up as probably just basic backups.
Could've purchased an external 3TB hdd with backup software cheaper than it's internal counter part. Would've done. Could've bought 2, backup my backup, easy, done.
Enough ranting. Got to get to work to pay for this 2nd hand equipment (that's no doubt gonna give me more problems somewhere, wouldn't be Netgear otherwise).
Have a good New Year Everyone
Especially you Chirpa for helping with this conundrum.
man....I gotta get me one of those things called a Life......

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
Chirpa
Got a question. My old nas hdd is coming from Duo v1 sparc.
If I got hold of a v1 sparc, would I be able to install the hdd's into it and it should read the info?
Obviously need a Duo sparc, can't with the newer v2's as they're Arm etc...
As looking at the data I've got through the recovery programs is just damn painful.
If I'm correct there, how do I add the hdd without a resync?
I've had a similar situation before where I unloaded my hdd's and realised I was in bother. Mdgm got me out of trouble last time, although made me work for it.
If I was to add a hdd into the nas with it powered off then powered up, but had raidar on to check there's no resync, would that be the correct way to go?
If so, does it matter whever I use bay 1 or bay 2 from old nas setup? Either hdd, 1 or 2?
I actually had to do it with bay 2 last time as I'd messed up bay 1. Kept the bay 2 to it's bay 2 in the reinstall, made sure I didn't put it in bay 1 etc..,.and the nas actually booted up and no resync. Everything was then fine. Added another hdd to bay 1 on a hot swap/add with the nas already on forcing it to resync with the already working hdd in bay 2.
Let me know whever I'm right here or not please.
I might bite the bullet and try to acquire a sparc for this data recovery, as it would make life much easier.
I need to look at these recovery programs properly instead of being tired like last night. It looked painful.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
If you got another sparc (duo or nv+ v1), inserting just that disk into it alone should let you access it. To be safe, you can use the Tech Support boot menu option on first boot and have mdgm or I take a look to verify the disk is intact.

Not sure I'll go that way yet. See how I get on with the recovery programs. See how hard or easy, fast or slow etc...
I'm guessing as long as the hdd is of a sparc format, then if placed in the nas in a powered down state, then when powered up the nas just thinks it's a native hdd and reads it as normal.
Confirm my theory there when you get a minute if you can please.

Re: RND2000-200 Not listed in Compatibility list?
It depends on various factor such as the state of the filesystem on the disks, the partitions etc.
Also things like the firmware version on the internal flash and the version on the disks.
Assuming everything is fine it should boot but if not what would happen could be a bit unpredictable.
