ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

This has been driving me insane.

When I try to copy a LOT of files off the ReadyNAS one of the disks starts reporting as failed. It seems to be either channel 5 or channel 2.

I've replaced the failed disk a number of times now and I'm convinced that it has to be something wrong with the backpane. The disks had not reported any smart issues up till that point and in the case of the last failure today the disk was only 3 weeks old.

Any suggestions? I can't do a backup because it is causing the disks to fail.

-- Edited to include support request ID in title --

Text of issue reported to Netgear Support is as follows :

I have had 3 hard drive failures in the same drive bay.

Each time the drive in bay 5 has failed it has been when I was attempting to make a backup of the ReadyNAS using a simple windows file copy, over the network, of all the files to an external USB disk attached to the windows machine.

Each time I have replaced the disk the new disk has been fine for a couple of weeks with no SMART error messages. When I kick off the file copy after a while the disk starts reporting as dead and the ReadyNAS powers down.

The ReadyNAS is currently configured as RAID-X2 with all drive bays filled, 4 x 2TB drive and 2 x 1TB drives giving 7399GB total disk with 1739GB currently in use. Running RAIDiator 4.2.19

I suspect that there may be something wrong with the backpane as it is the same drive bay that has failed each time.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk keep failing when coping a lot of file

Please open a tech support case (http://www.readynas.com/support) and post your case number (preferably editing title of thread i.e. subject of first post in thread if possible).

Even with the reported disk failure, you should have been able to complete the file copy to backup your system. Do you have a current and complete backup?

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

I am currently in the process of using FTP to back up the drive. It seems to be the only thing that is working as it's not stressing the ReadyNAS out as it just does a few files at a time. I'm about 60% of the way thru it right now.

Once I have a full backup I'll be in a position to do a factory reset if required by netgear support however 3 drive failures in the same bay really does point to a hardware failure to me.

Been thinking I should buy a second ReadyNAS Pro to do nightly backups to. Does the second one need to have matching storage capabilities or would it be ok to get one with just enough to do the backup and then expand it in the future as the data on the first out grows the capacity of the second?

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

I have two NVX units with matching disk sizes. However, I could probably get by with a little less space as I am only using a little over 2TB of the 4.5TB available (2x3TB + 2x2TB). You could certainly go with an Ultra 6 with enough drive space to cover your current data needs and then add or increase the drives as needed.

You currently have 4x2TB and 2x1TB drives. When or if you do a factory reset, if you reset with 3x2TB and 2x1TB drives you will have a net volume of about 5.6TB which means that you will be about 31% usage of the available space. (I am at 39% and was at about 60% before upgrading two of my drive to 3TB) Adding an Ultra 4 (RNDU4220-100NAS) with 2x2TB drive ($716 on Newegg) and adding the 2TB removed from your Pro would give you a net volume on the Ultra 4 of about 3.7TB and your data would be about 45%. You could then work over time on replacing the 3x2TB drives in your Ultra 4 with 4x3TB (net volume of 8.4TB) and move the 3x2TB from the Ultra 4 to the Pro which would give you a net volume of about 9.3TB. (4x2TB in the Ultra 4 and 3x2TB + 2x1TB in the Pro would both have about the same net volume of 5.5-5.6TB).

You might want to buy a spare 2TB in all of this as well - just in case.

The Ultra 4 will not be quite as fast as the Pro, about 10% slower. Of course you could purchase the Ultra 4 and a spare 2TB or 3TB (3TB is about $50 more right now, but until it had a second 3TB for redundancy, it would only have 2TB available) you could restore your data and use it while you are getting the Pro back on line (hopefully before long). Normally it is cheaper to buy a unit diskless and add the drives, but right now the drives have gone up, but the units with drives pre-installed have not yet gone up by as much, but that could change in days.

Multiple units and different drive sizes brings on a sort of chinese fire drill with drives. My NVX units started with 4x1TB in both, then I upgraded one drive to 3TB in one unit, then a second drive was upgrade, then I started upgrading the second NAS. I also allow a good week or more after upgrading one NAS before I touch the second, just to make sure everything is stable and operating normally.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

The disks that have been reported as bad. Do you think they are really bad or could it just be the back pane. Haven't heard anything from netgear Support yet so just planning on what to do with those disks.

If i reset with the bed disks in the unit would they start being recognized again or should I save them to put into a diskless unit that I might buy as backup?

What are the makes and models of the drives?

The disks that have failed are Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 1863 GB - Firmware CC32
The 3 x 2TB disks that are still in the system and working fine are the same make/model

Do you access the NAS with a Windows PC or a Mac?

I will have to be gone for several hours. I will check back in when I return.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

Primarily it is accessed from 4 different Mac's but it is also accessed from Windows machines but not as often.

The Mac's use it as the file store for their iTunes libraries and for Aperture libraries. We also store all our software downloads on there and make use of the FTP server over the internet for easy access to files while on the road. The most important data is the music and picture libraries.

The main reason I wanted to get a full file backup that caused this issue was so that i could do a factory reset after replacing the last two 1TB drives with 2TB drives so i could get dual disk redundancy on the RAID-X2 array. This would give me about roughly 7-8TB of storage of which i was going to dedicate 2TB to an iSCSI volume for use with my VMWare ESXi Test lab machine. The iSCSI volume would not need backups, it's transient and test labs can be rebuilt if needs be. So in reality I'd only need to backup capabilities for about 5-7TB so the Ultra 4 as a backup unit is probably doable with the right size disk in it.

I just found another thread that has the exact same symptoms of the issue I'm having.

Sounds like RMA may be needed. NetGear tech support should be able to confirm.

Re: ReadyNAS Pro disk in bay 5 keeps failing [17175701]

The reason I asked is there was another thread, which I can't find right now, that seems to link some of the issues of the Seagate ST2000DL003 hard drive in the NAS to those installations that have Macs. It doesn't make sense, but at one point there were three users in a discussion having problems and others chimed in with no problems. The ones have issues of intermittent disk failure issues were all using Macs, the ones that weren't were on Windows or Linux machines. Doesn't make sense, but computer issues don't always make sense.

Work with Tech Support and see what they can come up with.
