Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

Hi

I'm looking to upgrade my Duo as it is not handling streaming very well. I understand that perhaps the RAM (or whatever the relevant specs are) is not up to the task. I need more hard drive space anyhow. Seems that the Ultra 2 Plus could be the answer.

My questions are:

1) There is a Logitech media server software ("Squeezebox") option for the Ultra, but I wanted to be sure that the "Plus" wouldn't be a problem. Am I ok?

2) Should I expect problems with streaming flac or WAV files to my Transporter with this new unit? Is it robust enough? I'm assuming that the pertinent specs are quite an upgrade over the Duo. Thoughts?

3) How would you recommend copying my music directory currently on the Duo to the new box? (as easy as copy/past??)

Appreciate any help. Many thanks.

Josh

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

1) Fine. The "Plus" has faster CPU, so if anything will run Squeezebox better.

2) What's a "Transporter"? Should be fast enough.

3) How big is your music directory? Could do that if you like but better to use a Frontview backup job to copy direct.

I have around 400 MB. The Frontview thing sounds better, but hopefully it's not too difficult to figure out how to perform the backup job.

Are there any "forum favorite" HDDs? I'll pick one from the list, but I thought I'd ask for advice.

Thanks!

400MB isn't much so either way would work.

I think the Hitachi ones are quite problem. Just be sure to choose ones from the Hard Disk HCL

Oops. I meant GB, of course! Ha. I'll plan to use a backup function.

I hope you are planning to keep the Duo, it will be a good backup target, at least until the volume on the Ultra 2 Plus gets too large. Perhaps then you can go to an Ultra 2 or 4.

Yeah, I'll keep the Duo for back-up. I collect vintage or otherwise collectible CDs, so I'll have them for ultimate backup. I do rip them (flac or WAV) to the Duo with dBpoweramp for streaming to my Squeezebox units. I hate CD players!

I'm a bit concerned about installing the HDD into the Ultra+ and copying the files over, etc. I'll have to read up on that stuff, but hopefully it will go ok.

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

I am assuming you are talking about a blank HD into the Ultra +, not one with data on it. It's a simple process. Mount the drive in the tray, with the Ultra + on, open the door, insert the HD, latch the drive and close the door. The Ultra + (just as the other NAS units) will test the drive as to viability and size (cannot be smaller than the other drive) then initialize the drive and then start the resync. This will take some hours.

I have also ripped CD's onto my NAS, but then just play the .mp3 using Windows Media Player.

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

I plan to boot up my new Ultra 2 Plus tonight. After the factory boot, which configures the new disc, I plan to copy a few music file from my Duo to the Ultra and then run SqueezeCenter in order to test it out. Assuming all goes well, I thought I'd just copy/paste my other files. Is there a downside to that as opposed to a "recovery" function. I'm not tech savvy, so copy/paste seems easier.

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

Copy/paste will certainly work, however if you have your files in a share, and want to move the entire share, it is probably better to set up a backup job in Frontview from the duo to the Ultra. The first time can be a little confusing as in anything.

You will need the names or IP addresses of the two. For this reason among others, I always set a static IP address on my units. I set up up high in the range so as to not interfere with the DHCP assignments of the router. The router should skip over static IP addresses on devices, but why push the issue. I have three units, and the fourth number in the sequence, I have set to 201 for the primary NVX, 202 for the backup and 203 for my NV+. When added to the subnet of 192.168.1, my primary unit is thus 192.168.1.201.

Before setting up the backup job, go into Frontveiw on the Ultra 2 Plus and click on the "Shares" button. In the listing of shares, ensure that your shares match the shares you have set up on the Duo. You will have the default CIFS set up, but then click on the NFS icon and change it from disabled to read/write (or just write) and then also click on the Rsync icon and do likewise for each share. (I use read/write so it is easier to change direction).

Then on the left side click on the Backup button. In the pull down menu click on "Add a New Backup Job". Assuming that you will "pull" the data from the Duo to the Ultra 2 Plus, your first step in the new backup job should look like the image below, with the exception that you will want to use "Remote: NFS Server" for the first backup. The host is either the NAS name or IP address of the NAS holding the files you want to pull over, and the path is the share name. You will need to set the share up on the destination (Ultra 2 Plus) before doing this, if it is not already set up.

Once you have Step 1 filled out, click the "test connection" button to determine if the settings are correct.

Then in step two, in the pull down menu for the first blank, select "Share:xxx" where xxx is the name of the share you want the files to go to. While you can put them anywhere, it is far easier to match the setup of the Duo. Leave the rest of the blanks empty. There is no need to click on test connection and in fact it should be grayed out. The only shares that will appear in the pull down menu are valid shares on the Ultra 2 Plus.

Then click on apply. This should then take you back to the listing of backup jobs and the job you just set up should be job 001. On the right hand side of the line for Job 001 you should have a button marked "GO". This is a manual run button, and when you click on it, it will run the backup now. Unless you want to set up other backup jobs, I would click on it now and run the job. It will take several hours. I recently did this to copy a share containing a lot of files I was needing for a training session, so I set up my NV+ with two drives and copied a share with 55GB in it. It took two hours and two minutes.

Then change the source to "Remote"Rsysnc Server" for Job 001, test the connection again, and then manually run the job. Rsync is incredibly fast for incremental backups as it synchronizes the shares between two NAS units. For reference, since it had to set up the files it used, it took 41 seconds to synchronize that same 55 GB share, rather than the normal 5-10 seconds on most nights.

When everything has been copied over and verified with rsync, you can change the source from Duo to Ultra 2 Plus and the destination from Ultra 2 Plus, and manually run the rsync job again. If you want to erase files on the Duo that have been deleted from the Ultra 2 Plus when you run the backup job, click the box to do so on the destination step. Also set the backup times to schedule the backups. Mine start running at midnight.

This has been a little lengthy, but I hope I covered it for you If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

I appreciate that and will reference in the future. For now, I'm totally confused. I had tech support help find my 'c share' (it's a little c) which is where the Music folder was hidden. I coped about 70GB from the Duo successfully and tested Logitech Media Server (LMS) on the Ultra with success. This morning, I went into Browse (via Raidar) and it wasn't showing that 'c' with my music folder. I could go into LMS and access music files and I could see in one of the Raidar set-up menus that roughly 70GB of space was used with over 1.8TB remaining. I'll call tech support again, but something isn't configured properly.

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

While in Windows Explorer or Computer (both give similar views) in the tree on the left side of the windows, the NAS should show up under the Network heading. Clicking on the NAS name (along with the Duo name) should then show the shares. Clicking on the share name "media" will then show the first level folders.

If your shares on the Duo are showing up as drives, then that's because you mapped the share to a drive letter. I have done this on my primary NAS but not the others. It makes it easier to find the files in many Windows applications that are set up for drive letters.

If you try to access the shares and folders directly in the browser you will get a 404-file not found error. To the best of my knowledge, the only thing you can access directly is the admin (Frontview) setup by typing in "https://<ip address>/admin".

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

To see the "C" share you have to connect as the "admin" user. When you click the browse button in RAIDar it will open up the NAS in Windows Explorer by default attempting to use the credentials you logon to Windows or the saved credentials from previously connecting to the NAS (if you told your PC to remember them).

Re: Ultra 2 PLUS for Squeezebox streaming

I had forgotten about the browse button, since I have used Windows Explorer heavily since the Windows 3.0 days when it was called File Manager. I keep an icon of Windows Explorer in the Quick Launch tray and with two clicks I have the listing of shares showing. That makes three ways you can open the list of shares and then the files within.
