Please help me with my access point setup :(
Hi
I have a BT Business broadband router 2wire i think its called. I also have a netgear WG102 access point, i want to connect the two so i can pick up wireless internet from the access point. This is what i have tried so far.. I havent changed anything on the BT router and not sure if im supposed to? i plugged the netgear into my laptop and browsed to the interface at 192.168.0.254. Within here i have tried all sorts of things, starting by giving the netgear an ip address 192.168.1.*** becuase the BT routers IP address is 192.168.1.*** i have also tried setting the default gateway address to the ip address of the BT router. I have also added the BT routers MAC address to the "Access Point" section on the access point setup screen. Nothing i try is getting internet through the netgear!! i can see the netgear in my wireless list and can connect to it, but then it tells me its got limited or no connectivity. What am i doing wrong??? i cant find any decent instructions anywhere and the net gear instructions are very vague.:(

- jmizoguchiVirtuosoif you are just installing WG AP with ethernet cable then should be simple as chaining the device IP for the WG in a same LAN subnet so that you can access the WG unit but you should still have able to hook it up and able see SSID of the wireless and make connection
chainging the device ip are important so that you can access the interface but this not concern greatly for making wireless connection using your main router as DHCP - gearhead123NoviceSorry dont understand much of what you said there. I am not trying to connect with ethernet cable i am trying to connect the AP wirelessly to the BT business router. I have given the AP an IP address in the same subnet of the BT router e.g.
BT Router
IP 192.168.1.*
SM 255.255.255.0
NetGear Access Point
IP 192.168.1.*
SM 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.* (This IP address is the IP address of the BT router, not sure if thats correct setup)?
Somebody, Somewhere must have connected one of these things to a BT router???? - jmizoguchiVirtuosohiding private IP is useless.
show the ip - bob5244AspirantI think what you're trying to do is wireless bridging but I don't know if the BT Business hub can do it as I don't have one. If it can there will be some settings you need to change to tell it to repeat its signal to the access point of your choice, called in netgear's access point settings "wireless point to point bridge". If you google 2wire wireless bridging you get some results which are about turning the 2wire into "just a modem" which is not what you want to do. Sorry I can't be of much more help

show the ip
it doesnt matter what it is, its within the DHCP range of the BT router. - gearhead123Novice

Yes i did at first think it was wireless bridging that i needed to do, but repeater mode makes much more sense.
I am thinking i may have to give the AP the wireless security key off the BT router, but the security type on the BT router is WPA2-PSK and the security type on the AP only has options for WEP and OPEN. I did think about changing the security type on the BT router to WEP but i didnt want to mess with that and end up screwing somthing up and end up with no internet!
This is a nightmare, i will probably ring netgear tomorow and see if they can help and BT too. - jmizoguchiVirtuoso

AP must outside of DHCP is better to do - gearhead123Novice

Thats not what iv read in other posts?? - bob5244AspirantOk I understand now what you're trying to do. Yes if you want the AP to be a repeater you will need the wireless security types to be the same with the same SSID and password and as the WG102 doesn't support WPA2 in wireless bridging mode you will have to set the 2wire's security to WEP which if you're in a coporate environment might not be a great idea as WEP is not secure enough anymore. For more info see this link: http://documentation.netgear.com/wg102/enu/202-10144-01/WG102-6-12.html It sounds like you have already entered the MAC address of the 2wire into the netgear (should be in the parent AP section) as well as an IP address so all you should need to do is create a WEP security profile on the 2wire and use the same settings and key in the netgear's security profiles so they can "talk" to each other. The DNS server address should be the same as the 2wire's IP address if you haven't already. Let me know how you get on

?
if you setup static IP on device side , use OUTSIDE of DHCP
if you use address reservation under LAN setup, use INSIDE of DHCP
