Disable the WSP feature for the R7800 — Nighthawk X4S AC2600 router

How do I disable the WSP feature for the R7800 — Nighthawk X4S AC2600 router?

I have a new car and I want to connect it to my wifi net.

The car's manual states:
"It is not possible to connect to WPS-enabled routers. This also applies to a WPA2 connection. If your home router has WPS functionality enabled, it will not be accessible due to the limited security of WPS access management. To connect to WPA2 networks with WPS, the WPS function must be disabled in the router."

Might look under Advanced tab/Advanced/Wireless settings on the routers web page for any WPS options.

Generally, if WPS is enabled, devices won't see or use it unless you actively try to connect using it and press the WPS button on the router. Generally if you direct the device to the routers SSID name and input the password for the SSID named network, is all that's needed and preferred. This won't be effected if WPS is enabled or disabled. WPS is only active for a short 2 minute period of time when the WPS button is pressed.

I've never seen a device that needed wps disabled to function.

I'm betting its put in there so users don't try to use wps for connection

Are you having issues connecting?

Yes, even if internet connection via WiFi is an option, it may be that the car manufacturer does not recommend it, but it is not stated in the manual. They require WPA2 with password (CCMP).

When I try to connect to my WiFi network, the access points are not shown as visible/selectable options. The manual says that it is not possible to connect if the WiFi access points are:

-Network without encryption

-WPA3

-WEP

-WPA (with TKIP)

-WPA2 where there is the possibility to connect via WPS, and it is in this case that WPS should be disabled in the router.

I may have to settle for internet sharing from my mobile phone !

Sounds like rubbish written by someone who doesn't understand how routers work. I have never felt the need to disable WPS on my R7800. Just go ahead and connect in the way the car maker suggests.

Just another user with time on their hands.

Just ensure that WPA2 and AES is enabled on the router and then connect the device to the SSID name and use the password. Found on the routers web page under Basic/Wireless settings.

If you need to disable the WPS feature if needed.

WPS mode is inactive by default until you push the WPS button and initiate pairing mode.  The LED blinks when the WPS pairing mode is active.  If you don't have another device within range that is also in pairing mode, nothing will connect and the pairing mode will eventually time out.  Speculation on my part, the car manual is saying their system does not have the WPS feature so do not try to use it to connect to your modem.

Some modems, in their user interface, have the option to disable the WPS feature.  When disabled, you can push the WPS pairing button and nothing happens.
