Lack of settings in AP Mode

I am trying to improve broadband speed, and investigate excessive data usage. I have an R7800 connected (via a powerline adaptor) to a BT Home Hub. The latter is my network's gateway to the internet. It has its own WiFi, but I don't use it. I connect my devices (iPhone, Mac) using the wireless network created by the R7800. This is set to AP Mode.

Step 1 was to check the DNS settings on my R7800. I see that they are greyed out. Does this mean that I cannot set manual DNS settings in AP Mode? I have to use the default settings of the BT Home Hub (which cannot be changed)?

Step 2 was to turn on the R7800's traffic meter, so that I can measure data usage. Again, this is greyed out. Same question: can I not use the traffic meter in AP Mode?

I am puzzled by the inability to change many of the advanced settings, and can't quite understand why this is the case. Thanks for any help on this.

It's because, in AP mode, your R7800 is acting as a (stupid) network
switch (with wireless capability), not as a router.

If your "a BT Home Hub" has a modem-only mode, then you could use
that with your R7800 in full-function router mode.

Re: Lack of settings in AP Mode

Thanks for that antinode. You have confirmed what I feared.

The BT Home Hub, which is supplied with the BT broadband service, is not very configurable. I can turn the wireless transceivers off, and can disable DHCP. But whether these two steps turn it into modem-only mode, I've no idea. I guess I can give it a try.

Cheers.

It sounds unlikely, but you'll know if you get unexpected IP
addresses from the R7800-as-router when it's connected to the "a BT Home
Hub".  Cascading multiple routers can cause multiple problems, but not
everyone does the kinds of things which suffer those problems.

Yup.  You might get better info on the "a BT Home Hub" from a
BT-related source.
