R7000 2.4 GHz performance hit

Recently updated to the latest R7000 firmware V1.0.12.216_10.2.122.  Around the same time (don't remember if it exactly coincided with the update) my 2.4GHs speeds have tanked.  I'm only getting about 100mbps on 2.4GHz versus 600mbps on 5GHz and ethernet.  This is happening on ALL FOUR of my R7000 routers in my main home.  Anybody else experiencing the same?

It may be less than wonderful, but that's not a dreadful speed on some 2.4 GHz devices. Which ones do you own? Are they all the same? What speed did you get before the update?

5 GHz and wired are faster by design.

Did you reset and reconfigure the router? You shouldn't need to do that, but sometimes it helps.

What modem/gateway/ONT feeds the R7000?

What sort of network needs four routers? (What size mansion are you feeding?) How are they connected? I hope that at least some of them are set up as access points.

The R7000 is now more than a decade old. A decent middle of the road router in its day, but now a bit long in the tooth.

Re: R7000 2.4 GHz performance hit

It's coming in through a cable modem that delivers 600mbps.  I used to get much faster 2.4GHz speeds with a dual and tri band client (Lenovo T460) and with my iPhone 15 Pro.  The fact that it's doing this on all 4 routers makes me think it's not a hardware failure but rather a software/firmware issue (it's not like this hasn't happened before with Netgear updates)!

I've never seen sustained speeds on an AC router over 100mpbs. Occassional peaks maybe but not sustained. 2.4ghz is s slow network and sensitive to interference. Not sure how you were testing before but it wasn't until AX that we started seeing that 100mpbs 2.4ghz speeds.

There was a reason why I asked why you had four routers. That is a recipe for chaos on several fronts. Unless they are set up as access points, there can be conflicts on the network.

What is Double NAT? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

Four competing wifi sources are also a good way of confusing the wifi clients that are trying to connect to the network.

The R7000 is also one of those devices that allows you to configure it in wireless bridge mode. Do that and you are throwing in more opportunities for wireless chaos on your network.

In general, my take on networks, and most computer stuff, is that they should be as simple as possible to do the job in hand.

You may think that all was well before the latest firmware update, by the very fact of using new firmware can send the devices, and the network, through various internal reconfigurations that change what is going on on your already complicated network.

Re: R7000 2.4 GHz performance hit

In a lab under IDEAL conditions, the R7000 just barely hit over 100mbps at close range (see the attenuation plot). Thats under ideal conditions and close range. Once range starts increasing, its quite a bit below that 100mbps. Again, not sure how you were testing, but I'm doubtful you were much more than 100mbps. If you're getting 100mpbs on an 12 year old device, I'd be pretty happy.

There's always that old confusion over connection speed and throughput speed.

Sorry, I didn't see that.  I have two routers at my main home - one in router mode, and a second connected with ethernet Cat 5e cable as an access point (no double NAT).  The other two are at different houses.

Thanks Plemans, I hadn't see that review.  All I can say is that Netgear questioned their findings and I certainly have had more than 100mbps in the past.

Having said that it appears, for what ever reason, I'm only going to get 100mbps for the foreseeable future.

Thanks again, all.

Aha. That makes sense.

It always helps to have full details when troubleshooting. It can rule out many possible issues.
