R8000P Firmware Update Issue

I logged into my router via a desktop computer that is wired to the router. Using the advanced admin menu I clicked the button to check for a firmware update. It said "No new firmware version available." I am currently running with V1.4.1.42_1.3.4. Just to be sure, I went to the Netgear web site and found there WAS a new firmware available: R8000P-V1.4.1.50_1.3.10. So, why wouldn't the Check button see the new firmware and install it? I decided to download the firmware and update my router manually. I saw the progress bar move across the screen. I waited and waited more than the alloted 2 minutes as shown on the screen. My computer (wired directly to the router) and phone (wifi) did not have Internet connection. I waited some more. I finally gave up waiting and cycled power on my router. Thankfully it booted, but the firmware did not update. Is anyone else having this problem? Now I am concerned about turning my router into a brick. Should I try something else? Should I skip this upgrade and be happy with my current firmware? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: R8000P Firmware Update Issue

Greetings,

I upgraded to 1.4.1.50 manually yesterday.

Do not use automatic check and update.  Its unreliable and almost as bad as trying to update wirelessly.

You were correct to perform the update manually, downloading the file to your local machine connected via ethernet.  (best, safest method).  Downoad the file and extract it.  It has to be unzipped.  The file you will use for upgrade has the extension .chk.  Do as you did previously, browse to the folder where you unzipped the download from and point it to the file ending in .chk.

Press the upgrade button and wait for the process to finish.  The router will reboot when complete.

Re: R8000P Firmware Update Issue

Thanks for encouraging me, I tried to manually upgrade the router again. This time I did 2 things differently. First, instead of navigating to the router's web page via its IP address, I used www.routerlogin.net. I also moved the firmware file to the root directory of my computer. IT WORKED!

Thanks again!

Re: R8000P Firmware Update Issue

Attempted to install this update.
1) Router set to automatically upgrade firmware.  It is not doing so.
2) Attempted to upgrade via online download (i.e. the button under "Administrative").
3) Attempted to upgrade manually, downloading R7960P-V1.4.1.50_1.3.10.zipwhile connected to an ethernet wire.
4) Hard reboots before, and after upgrade completes, doesn't change anything.

Note:  The router log is apparently refreshed upon every reboot, so no record exists that I can locate, of what actually happened during the upgrade attempt.  However, there is a record of a consistent, and repetitive DoS attack by a set of IP Addresses

I haven't seen these in the log previously, but it doesn't mean that it's not routinely happening, i.e. the "interweb's" are a bit, sometimes nasty world out there).  I don't know if these are unique to my site, or if they are interferring with the upgrade process, but I doubt it, since uploading directly from a file doesn't work, either.

This problem is a huge timesink for users who purchased Netgear's equipment, to say the least.  Either:
1) Fix the problem..
2) recall/withdraw/reverse the upgrade
3) Post a notice, a bulletin to users
4) Email registered users with a clear explanation, and an ETA as to when they should expect resolution.

Again, this problem has evidently existed for at least three weeks.  Netgear is remiss in not doing those four, reasonable steps above.

UNACCEPTABLE, as a business practice.  I've used Netgear equipment personally and professionally for at least a decade, and probably, two.   I just purchased the R7960 to upgrade an R7900 which demonstrated questionable performance after 18 months of use.   This experience WILL influence my decision, the next time I buy or recommend network switches or routers.

Regards.
