RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

I have a very annoying problem. I can not add new devices to the wifi after the first initial setup, about 1 to 7 days. I've tried everything that doesn't involve hard resetting, but unfortunately hard resetting is the only working solution for me. Its annoying having to setup all my smart devices over and over.

An example of my problem. I hard reset the router and reconnect all my devices back to wifi. Everything goes well, no problem connecting. A few days later, I noticed I didn't connect my amazon fire cube. No luck, "connecting to wifi error, or wifi has no internet connection. I try everything that I know. Reboot router, power cycle, update firmware. Nothing works, I have to hard reset my router and setup all my devices again. Everything connects fine and my fire cube connects perfectly. A week later I buy a new smart lamp. Same problem before, it wont connect to wifi.

Can somebody please tell me whats going on with my router?

In that case, I'd go for the simplest option. You will find that Netgear recommends "bridge mode" as the preferred option.

How to fix issues with Double NAT | Answer | NETGEAR Support

Talk of some things like an unexplained "DMZ mode" is not for the faint hearted.

Stick with this bit:

https://kb.netgear.com/24086/How-do-I-set-up-a-default-DMZ-server-on-my-Nighthawk-router

That is the first of the three options you were presented. Bridge mode is a one off fix that eliminates all the other witchcraft. Use that and you can ignore the rest.

I'd start here and look at the various hits.

bgw320-505 bridge mode - Google Search

You may even find a useful video that takes you through the process.

I have my suspicions, but need more information.

What firmware version do you have on the device?

A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.

It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The make and model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

Re: RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

bgw320-505Thank you for your response.

My firmware is: v1.2.8.40

It is running off a modem/router from ATT Uverse. BGW320-505

Originally I disabled the wifi on the ATT router, but I re-enabled it because I got tired of hard resetting my Nighthawk router. Now I just add any new device on the ATT router.

Re: RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers
https://kb.netgear.com/24086/How-do-I-set-up-a-default-DMZ-server-on-my-Nighthawk-router
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Try option #2 first.

What is the first 3 characters of the routers serial number?

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Thank you for the assistance. I might need a little more help, I'm not really that good with networking stuff.

For step 2:

...disable ALL wifi radios on the modem

I know how to disable all my wifi radios on the modem.

... configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost:

I cant find this option in my  ATT modem router settings, but I know where it is on the NG's router settings.

...IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem

I did find this on my ATT modem.

Should I do the DMZ on my NG settings or IP passthrough on my ATT modem or do both?

What is the first 3 characters of the routers serial number?

Thank you again for the help.

Re: RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

You can't bridge the ISP Modem. Just configure the DMZ or IP Passthru on the ISP modem for the RAX router there. Nothing on the RAX router would need to be configured.

I would consider also updating to this version of FW as well. This Rev router saw many users seeing random reboot issues which this FW version fixes:

Re: RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

Thank you michaelkenward

Thank you FURRYe38

Followed all your steps and I was able to setup the IP passthrough on my modem.

After the restart, I was able to add all the devices I wasn't able to before.

Regards,

Alldren

Re: RAX120v2 - Can not add new devices

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
