Strange. My router thinks that i'm in the UK when I am in the USA, why?

Hi there!

I have a RAXE500 Router.

All of my internet searches from multiple computers and even commercials in YouTube think that I am in the UK. Even when I type "Where Am I" in Google or other Search Engines, all point me to London, UK. The Router region says North America. My IP Address shows correctly in the USA.

This mystifies me. What is the problem and solution, please?

Many thanks!

🙂

Re: Strange. My router thinks that i'm in the UK when I am in the USA, why?

Good attempts!

I found the answer after 2 hours of detailed detective work. The DNS settings looked fine...

The MAC address in the RAXE500 (from my computer) must have been corrupted., even though it looked correct.

I created a new MAC address and updated the router.

After that, I shutdown the router,  Arris TM1602 cable modem and the computer.

I then proceeded to initialize the cable modem and after that, the router.

Finally, the computer was rebooted and the new IP verified with the corrected  location.

My ISP is still on IPv4.

IMHO, I think that the Arris was confused with the old MAC address. Everything is perfect now.

Very strange issue!

Thanks for your help.

😁

Most likely not a router issue.

What is the model number and brand name of the modem/ONT/gateway that is the connection between your RAXE500 and the internet?

along with what @Kitsap says you might try a different dns server.

Try a different DNS Server. Here's a few. Also remember to change the ipv6 dns server if ipv6 is enabled.
CloudFlare
IPv4: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
IPv6: 2606:4700:4700:0:0:0:0:1111 and 2606:4700:4700:0:0:0:0:1001
GoogleDNS
IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
IPv6: 2001:4860:4860:0:0:0:0:8888 and 2001:4860:4860:0:0:0:0:8844

are you using any vpn's?

Which one? BT, the backbone of most ISPs in the UK, implemented IPv6 some years ago.

But only newer Netgear routers can handle BT's implementation.

Re: Strange. My router thinks that i'm in the UK when I am in the USA, why?

Hi.

My ISP is Altice USA.

Narrowing down the culprit, I think that Norton VPN was the actual cause as I connect to the UK for the BBC.

There must have been some latent interaction with that program, even though it was not manually enabled.

Certainly, a bug somewhere and not necessarily one for Netgear.

Nice to know that somebody else benefits from the licence fee that I pay to the BBC every year.

Re: Strange. My router thinks that i'm in the UK when I am in the USA, why?

Lol, mate -

Before moving to the USA, I paid my fair share.

Can't even get a Expat License and the VPN is so very random at working, almost painful.

When I come to the UK this year, I'll bang on BBC's HQ.

😅
