No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

I tried to set up the LAN port aggregation between my CM3000 modem and RS700S router. I connected the two aggregation ports of the CM3000 to the aggregation ports 1 and 2 on my RS700S router using CAT8 cables. I selected the LACP on the router and modem. I have even tried just one CAT8 ethernet cable. I have the latest firmware. But I cannot get my router to activate the LAN aggregation. What am I missing or doing wrong?

Also, I am getting faster speed from my RS700S on Wifi than I am on wired connections. How do I correct that?

Thanks, Matt

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

1. Why are you using lan port aggregation? Use the 10 gig wan port on the router and the 2.5gig port on the cm3000. You'll have better throughput and less issues with stability/latency/ping

2. the RS700 has 2x 10gig ports. 1 for the wan side, and one for device side. The other ports are 1gig. If you're only connected to a 1 gig line, you'll max out at gigabit speeds and not multigig. Thats how the wifi can hit faster speeds than the wired devices.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

Thank you for your advice. I have xfinity 1.2Gbps internet plan. When I connect my desktop to the 10G port on the router, I get more than 1.2G speed.

If I connected a netgear ethernet switch with 2.5G ports to the 10G port and connected my three PCs  to the switch, shouldn't I get similar speeds on all my PCs?  If so, which switch would you suggest? It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive since I am only connecting my three PCs.  Thanks, Matt

You can pick them up renewed for pretty darned cheap for an 8 port multigig switch.  Its worked fine for me.  It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive since I am only connecting my three PCs.  Thanks, Matt

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

When you connect your 2.5gig switch to the 10gig LAN port on your RS700, you should check to see if it is auto negotiating at 2.5gig. You can do this by logging into the router > Advanced > Show Statistics (under Internet Port). Then you'll see what speed LAN5 (the 10G LAN port) is negotiating at. If it's 1gig instead of 2.5gig, there might be an issue with your ethernet cable. And of course, when you connect your computer to the 2.5gig switch, make sure it's negotiating at 2.5gig and not at 1gig.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

Thank you for your advice. I will get an unmanaged switch with multiple 2.5g ports and connect it to the 10G LAN port. Then connect all three PCs to the switch. My Asus ROG Stryx GL703GM is the weakest but is capable of 1.7Gbps. This should work for me.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

If you're hardwiring it in, a usb 3.0 to ethernet adapter 2.5g might be a good option

Amazon.com: WAVLINK USB to 2.5G Ethernet Adapter, 2-in-1 USB C/USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter for Laptop C...

I've got one for my older laptop similar and it works great.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

I am wanting to set up an umanaged switch with 2.5G multiple ports that I can connect to the 10G LAN port on this RS700 router. Then connect my three PCs to the ethernet switch. How would the WaveLink help do that?

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

Yes, I am aware of the capabilites of my laptop. I can wirelessly reach 1.1G but wired is only 940Mbps. My two desktops will handle up to 2.5G speed and I want to connect all three PCs to the 10GLAN port using an unmanaged ethernet switch. Setting up aggregation appears to be impossible and I have yet been given correct instructions from netgear on what I am doing right or wrong. So I am going the ethernet switch way for now.  Thanks for your advice.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

In my previous reply, for some reason, I thought you already had a 2.5gig switch. If you are looking for one, you can get either the Netgear MS305: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Multi-Gigabit-Ethernet-Unmanaged-MS305/dp/B0BGYS7731

Or the Netgear MS308: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-8-Port-2-5GB-Switch-Multi-Gigabit/dp/B0D54STHFZ

Only difference between them in how many ports you need.

Re: No LAN port aggregation activation between CM3000 and RS700S

Yes, I am looking at netgear MS308, Trendnet TEG-380, and TP--Link unmanaged switches. I want it to be simple. Just connect and go. I want the best one too. I have already spent a thousnd dollars on the modem and router and that is a discounted price.

This RS700 is fast. Can't wait to get fiber optic ISP in September.

RS700S Ethernet Settings

In my RS700S router, the Ethernet Settings, It says the Ethernet Prot Aggregation Status is :  INACTIVE.

How do you make it ACTIVE ?

Re: RS700S Ethernet Settings

My problem with Ethernet Aggregation Port Status is solved.  Was not getting a signal from xfinity. Once I got the signal, my port status wen active.

Re: RS700S Ethernet Settings

Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Re: RS700S Ethernet Settings

I am waiting for my MS305 multi 2.5G ports unmanaged switch to arrive today. I was told I can connect one aggregation port on the CM3000 modem to the MS305 switch and the other modem aggregation port to my RS700S router aggregation port and it will allow my 1.2G internet speed from my ISP to pass thru the switch to my two desktops. In this setup, it would leave me two ports on the switch for other uses.  I hope this is the correct setup because I have two more laptops I want to connect to the MS305 switch. Does this sound correct to you?

Thanks, Matt

Re: RS700S Ethernet Settings

No.

There has to be router in between the CM3000 and the switch. If you enable LAG on the CM and RS, you would connect the 10Gb internet port and Port 4 from the RS to Port1 and 2 on the CM modem.

Review the PDF here:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Cable-Modems-Gateways/General-info-and-Troubleshooting-for-Cable-Mo...

Then if you want to see 1.2Gb out the LAN ports of the RS, connect up a muili-gig switch to the 10Gb LAN port on the RS. Connect your ethernet connected PCs to this switch.

Re: RS700S Ethernet Settings

I got the MS305 unmanaged switch and connected it as you said from the 10G LAN port to the switch and the PCs to the switch. Getting the xfinity speed of 1.2Gmbps and better.

Thanks, Matt
