IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

Hi

My ISP requires Prefix Delegation for IPv6 support.

Is there a way to configure the RBK50 router to fetch prefix delegation from my ISP?

Or is it not supported?

/Morten

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

What Firmware is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

I believe under Advance Settings there is IPv6 menu and a drop down menu. Select from the menu of IPv6 options. ISP should be able to tell you which one to use.

Review the user manual starting at page 39:

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

Hi

My current firmware is V2.3.1.44

My modem is DSL pass through.

The information i got from my ISP is that my ISP is that my router must request prefix delegation over DHCPv6.

I have tried DHCP, Auto config, Auto Detect and pass though. But the router did not get any thing.

Just to be on the safe side, i have tried to plug my laptop directly to the modem, and i got a prefix delegation immidiatlly

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

What is your ISP. I have my system working fine with BT in the UK and that requires PD.

How have you configured your IPv6 settings?

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

The prefix delegation bit isn't anything special, I believe you select DHCP as the IPv6 WAN connection type and it should be automatic.

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

These are my settings but as stated above, I didn’t do anything fancy, it just worked but I know BT uses PD.

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

Hi

Thanks for the reply. My ISP do not support PPPoE, they uses direct connection.

From the information I have been given, the router must support prefix delegation over DHCP. But setting it to DHCP do nothing.

I will try to contact NG support

Re: IPv6 DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation

Orbi supports prefix delegation.

Please check th configuration below:

root@RBR50:/etc# cat dhcp6c.conf
interface wanifname {
             send ia-na 1;
             send ia-pd 11;
             request domain-name;
             request domain-name-servers;
             request ntp-servers;
             request sip-server-domain-name;
             request sip-server-address;
             script "/etc/net6conf/dhcp6c-script";
};

id-assoc na 1 {
};

id-assoc pd 11 {
};
root@RBR50:/etc#

DHCPv6 prefix delegation operates as follows:

  1. A delegating router (Server) is provided with IPv6 prefixes to be delegated to requesting routers.
  2. A requesting router (Client) requests one or more prefixes from the delegating router.
  3. The delegating router (Server) chooses prefixes for delegation, and responds with prefixes to the requesting router (Client).
  4. The requesting router (Client) is then responsible for the delegated prefixes.
  5. The final address allocation mechanism in the local network can be performed with SLAAC or stateful/stateless DHCPv6, based on the customer preference. At this step the key thing is the IPv6 prefix and not how it is delivered to end systems.
