Intermittent Internet connectivity outage with Orbi RBR50

Router Firmware Version : V2.5.2.4
2.4G ChannelAuto ( 13(P) + 9(S) )
2.4G ModeUp to 400 Mbps
5G Channel36(P)+40+44+48
5G ModeUp to 866.7 Mbps

As title, things has been working fine for months until recently when intermittent Internet connectivity outage with Orbi RBR50. Happen in random, could be 15mins apart to once every hour. When it happened, WiFi remain active, just no Internet. Device range from iOS to Windows are affected. Try DISABLE the following as recommended in some other KB but no luck :-

Daisy-Chain Topology
Implicit BEAMFORMING - Boosts WiFi speed, reliability, & range for all mobile devices
MU-MIMO
Fast Roaming

Didn't monitor if any new WiFi AP pop-up in the neighborhood but do wonder if this is WiFi related. May be conflict with other WiFi AP in similar channel ? Check Connection Status and see no interface drop nor anything suicipous too 😞

Any idea ?

Re: Intermittent Internet connectivity outage with Orbi RBR50

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

This happen with both wired and wireless devices?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

There is more recent FW available that supersedes v4:

What mode is this modem working in? This has a built in router and wifi, This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Re: Intermittent Internet connectivity outage with Orbi RBR50

Thanks for the help. Never heard of the Double NAT issue but great to learn something new. However, since the unit has been working ok for couple months before this happen, I am not quite sure if Double NAT is the issue. Hence, thanks sharing the "Most Stable Orbi Configurationlast" from @Nibir , things seems to be stablized now. No more Internet outage after the changes. What I changed are :-

03. Fast Roaming - Disable
07. Logs - Untick logging of DoS attacks and Port scans
08. Channel 1 for 2.4 Ghz ( I changed from Auto to 1 ) and Channel 36 for Ghz ( No Change )

Will keep monitoring for couple more days and see how it goes. Thank you all 🙂

08. Channel 1 for 2.4 Ghz ( I changed from Auto to 1 ) and Channel 36 for Ghz ( No Change )

Curious about this recomendation.

Doesn't this depend on other WiFi signals present in the environment?  Why isn't Auto or the default a good choice?

Seems rather prescriptive for everyone to select the same channels.  It could be counterproductive if Orbi was very common and my neighbors follwed the same advice!

Happens if your modem has a built in router along with using the Orbi router as well.
