Speed issues on RBR50 via satellite
Here's my current set-up:
- RBR50 - router (firmware V2.7.3.22)
- RBS50 - satellite (firmware V2.7.3.22)
- Satellite uses wireless backhaul as cabling isn't feasible - backhual status is listed as 'good'
Recently, I was able to upgrade my internet connection to a full-fibre set-up, offering max speeds of 500Mbps down/75Mbps up. This was only connected yesterday, so the connection itself is still 'settling', though I have been able to get not far off this via an ethernet connection to the router (e.g., 425Mbps down/75Mbps up)
The router itself is running in router mode, connected directly to the ONT (so not having to deal with any poor quality, ISP-provided routers!)
I am, however, struggling to get great speeds from anything but a wired connection to the router. My previous internet connection maxed out at around 50Mbps, so I had always put that down as the bottleneck, but that is obviously not the case.
For example, here are some speed tests on various devices:
- Pixel 6 - struggles to maintain WiFi speeds, so whilst it may peak high (~175Mbps), it can't sustain this and results in a down speed of around 125Mbps. Upload speeds struggle to get beyond 10Mbps
- Macbook - similar to the situation with the Pixel. Won't sustain these speeds, and tends to settle in at around 125/15Mbps.
- I've run some WiFi analytics in various rooms throughout the house and, in all, I get at least 60% signal and mostly 866Mbps speeds (one room that drops to around 350Mbps).
- My desktop PC is connected via Ethernet to the satellite. This gives better results and tends to sustain the speeds, but not really close to the maximum I'd get from connecting directly via a wired connection to the router. For example, I'll get a sustained 200Mbps down, and around 30-40Mbps up.
It could be that my expectations for what Orbi can achieve are somewhat skewed. Please let me know if that's the case! I had just hoped that getting more than I currently am.
Any advice would be gratefully received!
Thanks,
Andy

The first thing to investigate when you change your Internet service is the router's configuration. It will have acquired various settings from the previous service. Now that you have got something faster, you want to clear out any memory of the earlier service.
One way to do this is to factory reset the router and set it up from scratch. An alternative is to run the Internet Setup Wizard.
You can always create a backup of your current settings so that you can restore them if the reset gets you nowhere.
When it comes to wifi speeds, remember, the wifi client is more important than the wifi source. The source may deliver the fastest wifi going but if the clients can't handle it, you won't see that speed. One way to test this is to try the same wifi clients on several different wifi services. Does your mobile phone run a lot faster when it is away from your Orbi router? If not, don't blame the router.
