Re: New BETA Release anyone?
Unfortunately this confirms what I suspected. Having been a long time user from the Infrant NV days, the next time one of my 3 ProPioneers fails, I'm going to go to Synology. Most of my stuff is OSX now anyway and Synology seems to have a good reputation among the Apple community. Trouble is replacing 3 units at once is a big chunk of change !
I've seen Netgear do the same to its Media Streaming product line (NeoTV550 etc).

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
I wonder whether I should tell my boss to hold off on a purchase order for a number of Pro 6s as his primary concern with Nas products is with the firmware and feature/functionality improvements.
Maybe I should tell him to move over to Synology or Qnap. Any ideas?

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
Hi Spiderman,
I would be very careful in automatically continuing with Netgear ReadyNAS purchases. My suggestion would be to evaluate the ReadyNAS, QNAP and Synology products as though this was your first purchase and refresh your original selection consideration notes against what is *now* available in the market. Obviously the ReadyNAS line is quite stale but perhaps its cost/features match your needs best. On the other hand one of the other manufactures make a better fit today.
What ever your decision I would not place much/any emphasis on support from Netgear. It looks as though those days have gone.
Regards,
Ian.

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
As I posted in another thread in here, there haven't been any 4.2.23 builds for over three months, so I don't see any public betas coming soon at the current rate.

what would be the point.. it will always suck in comparison to 6.x as that will be were the development cycles will be invested...

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
If the purchase can wait a quarter or two, then I'd tell him to wait and see how the RN5xx line is received. Prices will likely drop on the Pro-6, so that becomes a better bargain.

I'd also advice him that he should never buy a product hoping for future improvements. The purchase decision should be based on what it does now. Otherwise you are gambling on something you have no control over.
Having actually used 6.x....

I like the new OS, but I'd still like to see the existing platform firmware re-stabilized and more of the outstanding bugs fixed. I expect to use my existing NAS for some years

In my humble opinion, hardware on most Nas products today are very similar. What differentiates them is their OS. I own two Readynas Pros that I find require OS re-installs periodically due to disk image tranfers from Pro to PCS and vice-versa , etc. This has never happened on my Synology box which I have owned for 5 years now. I cannot run the latest firmware they released last year (DSM 4.1), however, the version previous to this one I can (DSM 3.5). They have continually upgraded and improved what initially came with the box releasing two new OS versions within the span of 4 years.
I bought my Pros knowing that the OS would evolve with time. This is what I was told by my Netgear reseller.
My Pros still have 3 and 4 years warranty's I am urked that Netgear cannot even provide simple bug fixes that have been voiced by many on the forum. My boss knows that I own Netgear nases and wanted to know honest opinion. Well, I think you sense what I have told him. I cannot afford to compromise my position with my boss even if new Netgear nases have been launched. We have no time to wait.
Well, I do not know what will be of my Pros and my allegiance to Netgear at this point. I might take our business (30 nases still to be purchased for my organization) somewhere else.

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
I do understand your frustration, and I didn't suggest that you should stick with ReadyNAS no matter what.
I stand by my advice not to buy products based on futures. Its fine to hope for improvements, and reasonable to expect bug fixes. But if the product is missing features out of the gate, it's safest to assume it will never get them.

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
OK, I'll bite.
I agree and admit on occasion I've been frustrated certain items have not been made available that I felt should have been. "New BETA Release anyone?" - IE where's the beta fixing issues we have that are relevant and pressing - and were on the box? Specifically, where is the fix for the NVX XRAID2 file system corruption issue quite a few users have experienced? I had this issue impact me on an NVX BE and dutifully placed a service call. XRAID2 you would admit is a feature I should be able to count on - it is a fundamental component of the NVX. IMHO every existing NVX currently in use at risk of experiencing complete and total loss of data without remediation. This has been reported and Netgear is aware of the issue. Where is the bugfix? Where is the warning for those not yet in a bad state?
Reasonable to expect bug fixes. I'm being reasonable, where's my bug fix?

- at the expense of existing users with real world problems that make the entire function of a NAS irrelevant? I'm sorry, but to spend your time trying to push a new product out the door when people that gave you money are being actively ignored is not OK. I know emails have been sent to senior Netgear employees and there has been no response.
NETGEAR said the reason for the delay was that its team was heads-down developing the new ReadyNAS OS 6 that powers all the new models.
Reasonable to expect bug fixes. I'm being reasonable, where's my bug fix?

I agree that Netgear has not been as timely or responsive on these as they should be. Hopefully that will change soon.

Re: New BETA Release anyone?
What bugs me most is that they are talking OS 6, all nice and good but how much faith am I supposed to have in that if they can't even get the current stuff fixed? Next thing, no beta testing for older bug fix releases and then coming up with a new OS that apparently had very little real world Beta testing done at all? Don't get me wrong but that is NOT what I understand as good product development...

Why fix whats old and broken? Start with a clean slate, for new customers, leave the old ones behind.

Chirpa, sounds like you quoted the Netgear Slogan/company mantra 😉
In all seriousness though, it stinks for old users, but maybe we can get a beta or community built source through our continued discussions on the great resource.
