Logitech Media Server

I have a old ReadyNas DUO V1 (ReadyNASRND2000/Sparc) which I have used successfully for several years.  However, it has finally failed so I'm looking at getting a replacement.  One of the features I use is the Logitech Media Server Add-on which I use to stream music to a Logitech Duet, Radios and smart TVs.  Checked on Logitech Squeezebox forum about comtaibility of their add-on with new ReadyNas models but they confirmed it only supports old ReadyNas Duo and V2 models. Suggested I check here for add ons/apps that can be used with new ReadyNas models.  Looked here http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=9 and see a Logitech Media Server app listed.  Before I commit to purchasing a new ReadyNas (looking at a  NETGEAR RN202 model) can anyone one confirm it will allow me to stream music directly from the NAS as with my old setup?

Thanks

      Guide

Thanks for feedback.  I run a set of backup jobs that backup ReadyNas content to an external USB connected drive so recovering my data to a new ReadyNas will hopefully not be a problem.

I can see that the link you provide takes me to a topic which then provides a dropbox link to the author's apps one of which is the LMS.  The topic itself was closed at the end of 2014 so can you tell me where is the best place to post any queries I might have regarding the app?

      Thanks

I had a similar setup with a Duo V1 that started to drop off the network, so i purchased a RN204 and a new 2 TB Red disk and used the 2 TB Red from the Duo (Originally i had 2 1 TB Seagate drives but after disk failure on disk 1 i swapped it out for a WD Red).

I also have a Logitech Squeezebox Duet and i works just the same on my RN204. Actually my Yamah AVR (Which is connected to my LAN) can also access the Logitech Media Server directly and play back my music collection.

Either way it works very well.

I used to have a Duo V1 with 1 x 1 TB Seagate Barracuda and 1 x 2 TB WD Red (Originally i had 2 Barracudas but swapped one after rising error count) running the Logitech Media Server. The Duo started to drop off my network so i purchased a RN204 to replace it.

I also have a Logitech Sqeezebox Duet to stream my music collection to my soundsystem, and it works just as good on my RN204. I just installed the Logitech App on the NAS.

I have a Yamaha AVR that can connect directly to the Logitech server and stream without using the Duet hardware.

Usually that happens because the automated spam filter kicks in.

Instead of reposting, you can send a PM to one or more mods.  If you click in the ... next to the post title, you might see a "mark as spam" or "report inappropriate content".  (I'm not sure if normal users see both options or not). Both will remove posts, but if you use "report inappropriate content" you should include a remark saying that you just want to remove a duplicate.

I removed your first two replies.

  • So I'm running the Logitech Media Server (hereafter LMS) 1.0.8 add-on from super-poussin (hereafter s-p) using the most up-to-date nightly build of LMS (7.9.0 - 1455631301). It works beautifully.

I have to say, getting LMS set up in ReadyNAS OS 6.x wasn't straightforward. The add-on initially encountered installation errors. And then installing updated versions of the LMS (I think s-p's add-on comes with 7.7) didn't go especially smoothly. If I recall, I had to manually replace existing LMS files from the s-p install with the ones I extracted from the 7.9 nightly tarball. But once it was up and running (with plugins, no less), I set it up so that it downloads nightly updates automatically and then I can install them with a simple terminal command, which is actually provided as part of the update instructions – else I never would have figured it out.

s-p's LMS add-on comes in two flavors: 1.0.6 and 1.0.8. I didn't have much luck with 1.0.6, so I tried 1.0.8. I think it was necessary to install 1.0.6 first, then install 1.0.8 over it.

Sorry my memory of the process is so spotty. So much of it was trial and error—and for a time I was running UE Media Server—that oftentimes it was the equivalent of throwing things at the wall to see what stuck. But short answer to your question: Yes, you can run LMS on newer ReadyNAS machines, and it will work very well with devices in the Squeezebox line.

    • Oh dear!  Looks like the process of enabling LMS on a ReadyNas is still as troublesome as it was when I set it up on a ReadyNas Duo 5 years ago!  Have purchased a new ReadyNas RN212 at OS 6.4.2 but can't find any clear instructions on how to enable LMS.

The obvious route would seem to be to select the LMS available via the Apps tab in the ReadyNas admin pages. It's listed as Logitech Media Server, Developer: Poussin, V1.0.6 but when I tried this I got an install error although it subsequently appeared under Installed Apps OK. I turned the App On and can see the server on my network but when I select Music folder, it's shown as empty (it's not, and I can see and play the contents if I use DLNA access).

By trawling various forums I've found reference to other LMS resources including:

      1. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ie9pwk1wut72ias/AACr8V9vMB2dC5lbj03l5VyDa/Logitech%20Media%20server?dl=0 where there are later releases of the above app (lms_1.0.7_all.deb, 1.08, 1.09) and various Logitechmediaserver deb files (e.g. logitechmediaserver_7.7.2_all.deb, 7.7.3, 7.8.0) all supplied by Poussin
      2. http://downloads.slimdevices.com/ has various versions of the above logitechmediaserver files including a v7.9.0 in the nightly build folder

Would appreciate any pointers as to what files to use and the sequence to install.  (Is just an lms file required or a LogitechMediaServer file as well? If both, why?) Also are there steps that have to be performed within the LMS Settings pages to make the music library visible to attached network devices (e.g Logitech Radios and Duets).

      Thanks
