How to automate HDParm tweak?
Hi,
I've fitted a couple of Seagate ST32000542AS in my NV+ and they work fine. The only problem was the annoying clicking sound they made every so often. After some Googling I've fixed that too, after enbabling SSH and root access I SSHed to the NV+ and, as root, ran:
hdparm -B 254 /dev/hdc
hdparm -B 254 /dev/hde
And that shut them up perfectly :D
However, I understand this tweak won't survive a restart, so what's the right place to add those lines so they're run at startup in the ReadyNAS? I assume they'll need to be run again as root, does that complicate things?
Thanks!

- rnas_newbieAspirantwhat f/w version are the disks running? - as the latest version removes this "click"
- JimBeenGuideCC35, which had to be forced on as per: http://niallbest.com/seagate-2tb-st32000542as-cc35-firmware-upgrade/
That might have made the click less frequent, but it certainly didn't remove the click. At the time I followed that guide CC35 was the latest firmware version I could find via the Seagate website, I've had a quick look now and I can't find a later one, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place? - JimBeenGuideNo one else got a clue?
Either for a later firmware or where is appropriate to place the commands? - EtzAspirant

Use shell script and cron/crontab to run that script, because as far as I know Readynas doesnt use and ignores startup scripts, at least most of them. :roll: - super_poussinVirtuosocreeate a simple script called for example poussin.sh
copy it in /etc
then edit /etc/frontview/addons/addons.conf
and addHDPARM!!HDPARM!!1.0!!/etc/poussin.sh!!!!Other
then edit /etc/default/services and add
HDPARM=1
HDPARM_SUPPORT=1 - JimBeenGuideThanks for that, I've given it a go and restarted the box. I VPN'd in from work to do it, so I don't know if it's taken effect but the device restarted just fine so it looks promising. I'll get back to the forum with the results ASAP in case anyone else if thinking of doing the same with theirs.
Talking of others, for their information I also copied those files to backups ones before I modified them, just in case...
cp /etc/frontview/addons/addons.conf /etc/frontview/addons/addons.conf.old
cp /etc/default/services /etc/default/services.old
Then editted as super-poussin instructed:
vi /etc/frontview/addons/addons.conf
Using instructions here http://www.cs.colostate.edu/helpdocs/vi.html because only sadist know the vi commands off the top of their head ;)
And then:
vi /etc/default/services
To do the last bit. Typed reboot, hit enter and crossed my fingers.
Again, thanks to everyone especially super-poussin for their help. - JimBeenGuideAll, worked like a charm. Thanks!
- super_poussinVirtuosoyou're welcome
- mindmoverAspirantI've tried this on two readynasDuo's with fw 4.1.9 and 4.1.10 but it doesn't work.
My script runs fine when I start it by hand and the drives respond to the hdparm commands.
name file: ungreen.sh
#!/bin/bash
hdparm -B 255 /dev/hdc
hdparm -B 255 /dev/hde
In the addons.conf i've put
HDPARM!!HDPARM!!1.0/etc/ungreen.sh!!!!Other
in the services file i've put
HDPARM=1
HDPARM_SUPPORT=1
But the script won't start automaticaly by reboot or by turning off and on the nas.
Am I forgetting something?
(By the way, i am not a linux user so most commands are totaly new for me) - fastfwdVirtuosomindmover: Your new addons.conf line is missing a couple of exclamation points after "1.0".
