RND4000 NV+ v2 & Seagate 3TB drives - firmware issue on iMac
I have 2 new Netgear recommended , Seagate 3TB Barracuda Hard Drives which on the Netgear compatability page says may require a firmware upgrade.
On the Seagate site it states that the CC4H upgrade is for intel based machines - no mention of the ARM processor on the NAS, and to confuse matters further, that it should not be applied on drives intended for RAID
Has the Netgear site made a mistake?
Will I need to perform a a firmware update to get these drives to work?
How can I do this on a mid 2010 iMac with no external sata connections for the drives I have?
My NAS will probably be delivered tomorrow, so your advice is more than welcome.
If, as I suspect the drives will work but with only a small proportion of the 3 TB visible to use, what other ways can I use to upgrade the drive firmware?
Thanks

I am not seeing that here: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/e ... Q/223651en You certainly need an intel machine to perform the upgrade. That is quite different from saying that it is "for intel based machines". I don't see the "not be applied on drives intended for RAID" at all. Maybe you can post a link?oranda wrote: On the Seagate site it states that the CC4H upgrade is for intel based machines - no mention of the ARM processor on the NAS, and to confuse matters further, that it should not be applied on drives intended for RAID
I doubt it.oranda wrote: Has the Netgear site made a mistake?
I don't know the consequences of not running the update. Posts on the seagate site talk about chirping.oranda wrote: Will I need to perform a a firmware update to get these drives to work?
Not easily. If the iMac has an intel processor, you can try Seagate's bootable CD. You could also try to disconnect your current hard drive, and temporarily connect the Seagates. Or find a friend with a Windows desktop PC... Hopefully you will be lucky, and the drive will come with CC4H. Note that the affected drive model is ST3000DM001-9YN166oranda wrote: How can I do this on a mid 2010 iMac with no external sata connections for the drives I have?
That would not be an expected outcome with a V2. the V1 hardware doesn't support 3 TB drives, so it would be the outcome there. That is an v1 platform limitation, there is nothing that can be done about it. However, it is not an issue on the V2 platforms, or the x86 platforms (x86 platforms need to be running 4.2.16 or later firmware).oranda wrote: If, as I suspect the drives will work but with only a small proportion of the 3 TB visible to use... - orandaAspirantThe warning regarding not using CC$H? for RAID drives appears when running the windows installation software. I didn't pursue the installation on the one machine I have available as it uses a raid, and there are no spare sata points .
I may have to take the drives into work (I'm on holiday at the moment, and get my IT guys to do the upgrade for me) - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
There is this general warning here: http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracuda/Frequently-Asked-Questions-related-to-firmware-issues/td-p/23154oranda wrote: The warning regarding not using CC4H for RAID drives appears when running the windows installation software... Q: Can I update the firmware while my drive is connected to a RAID controller?
A: Customers utilizing RAID architectures incorporating affected products should back up all data content before upgrading drives with the firmware solution. For some arrays firmware upgrades may cause RAID management software to require the array to be rebuilt. Please consult the technical documentation and procedure recommended by the RAID controller manufacturer for your system prior to upgrading any affected product in an array. Please proceed with caution and contact Seagate Technical Support for assistance.
That wouldn't apply to your situation, since these drives aren't even formatted.
That'd be much easier than doing trying to do it on the iMac.oranda wrote: I may have to take the drives into work (I'm on holiday at the moment, and get my IT guys to do the upgrade for me) - dts002Aspirant
I am using this Netgear NAS with Western Digital and not Seagate hard drives.
These Western Digital hard drives are listed below (as well as in the attached screenshot).
Is there a special Western Digital firmware update that I should load?
Or if I can load the Seagate firmware update (from the http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/223651en website) then which one do I load? I want to be sure to load the right one (see the screenshot).

You have an NV+ V1 (and yes the labels are confusing...). Read this: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/
Your NAS is limited to 2 TB drives, it does not support anything larger.
