Smart Drive Errors and UPS error!
Dear all,
Several weeks ago, after 2 years of problem free running of my Ready NAS Duo, I started to receive drive #1 errors, e.g.,
Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 1: Previous count: 1150 Current count: 1199 Disk 1 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible. Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
This changed to Disk 1 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. messages and so I replaced disk 1 last week with a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 (which is on the compatibility list). The disk synchronized but almost immediately reported Smart disk errors. I actually bought 2 disks with the intention of replacing them both - instead, I've just swapped the same disk out (disk 1) with the other new one and it's busy synchronizing now - but I've just noticed that I have an error being reported with the UPS (APC Back-UPS ES 550G) - it shows an amber light and 'Out of Spec' as the status. (I had to unplug the UPC USB lead to open the disk door - I did this last time but did not get an error). Is the problem likely to be the NAS as opposed to the hard disks?
Are there any diagnostics that you would recommend I perform?
Regards
Ian

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI don't see how a UPS issue would spread to SMART errors on the disks. Also, if the UPS is delivering inadequate power, I'd expect the duo to generate alerts on the voltage.
You can shut down the NAS and connect the drives to a PC - running SeaTools. You can also check the SMART stats on the PC (they are stored by the drive firmware, not the NAS). Acronis Drive Monitor is one freeware package that will show them. - IanLawdenAspirantExcellent - thank you for the reply Stephen.
My logic was that a fault with the NAS was erroneously reporting erros - as it happens, just hooked up my drive caddy so that I can do a test - wasn't aware of the software you mentioned - but will give it a try. Regards
