WebDAV in W7? Digest Authentication? Other options?
Dear all,
Looking for some help with being able to access my Ultra2 shares using SSL WebDAV in Windows.
A little bit of investigation on the matter suggests that Windows7 will only authenticate a WebDAV folder using Digest Mode, whereas the ReadyNAS only seems to support Basic Mode authentication?
Am I missing something?
I purchased this bit of kit so I could access files and stuff from anywhere using a Web Browser; the Drag and Drop functionality of WebDAV integration being the deciding factor - which I now can't use, so I'm left feeling I may have just stuck with DropBox for free!
I am aware of ReadyNAS Remote software, and of NetDrive - but I will not always has the privileges to install client s/w on a given computer, plus it does kinda defeat the object of the simple secure web-interface goal.
Any tips, help or guidance would be most appreciated..
Regards,
Simon.

- sphardy1ApprenticeTo avoid such issues, personally I use the 3rd party application Ajaxplorer which works just fine over HTTPS. It installs on the NAS and no client software is required
The latest production release also adds WebDAV support which might be an alternative to the ReadyNAS implementation for you - BlueMagicianAspirantThanks for the info, it's much appreciated, but I can't help but feel like that's a little overkill for what I need.
Is there any way to change the ReadyNAS config to accept Digest level auth? It's such a make or break getting this to work - I don't see why I should have to go 3rd-party to get such a basic feature working.
I was really hoping I'd missed some update or something that made it work..
Thanks,
S. - sphardy1ApprenticeWindows 7 forces the use of Digest authentication which is currently not supported by ReadyNAS from what I can tell.
Until Netgear add support (assuming that they plan to), you may find it easier to configure Windows 7 to use basic auth.
eg http://www.webdavsystem.com/server/docu ... auth_vista - BlueMagicianAspirantThanks again, sphardy,
Sadly, if I had the user privileges to change registry values on machines where I needed access, then I might as well install ReadyNAS Remote. On most of the machines in question, I won't. Just as you wouldn't in almost any Windows AD/GPO controlled environment that took security seriously.
I just wish I'd known all this before I bought the thing. I knew enough to look for an appliance that offered SSL WebDAV folders sharing, but I never expected it to be unconfigurable or broken for Windows7.
In any case, I sincerely appreciate your time and advice - thankyou.
Tell me, does the plug-in you mention completely replace the user/folder creation side of things too, as well as the web file-hosting side of the Ultra2, or is it simply a prettier web-based file explorer that sits on top of what FrontView creates at the core?
Kindest regards,
S. - sphardy1ApprenticeAjaxplorer sits on top of your NAS setup. You can configure it to access any data on your NAS - mirroring your share setup if you prefer, or creating some alternative setup entirely.
I just looked at WebDAV support and found that you will need to manually configure a share for HTTP access to enable this feature, requiring you to enable root SSH access to your NAS. This is not needed for a standard Ajaxplorer installation, but for WebDAV there are some settings needed that Frontview does not give access to. If you are uncomfortable with command line linux, then this may not be an appropriate option for you.
(Specifically you need to enable the use of .htaccess files which are used by the Ajaxplorer WebDAV option) - BlueMagicianAspirantThanks for the info sphardy,
So basically, if I'm going to have to put in that much work, I might just as well do it on a virtual server that's hosted in a 99.99% uptime datacenter on a decent pipe. Or just live without WebDAV and stick with DropBox for free.
It's a shame the product doesn't work as advertised, and I can't believe they're leaving such useful functionality unpatched. RMA request methinks.
Again, thank you for your time and effort, regards,
S.
