Configuring Plex Remote Access with NAS device

Configuring Plex Remote Access with NAS device

I am relatively new to understanding how to manage the settings on my router. I am running a Plex server on a NAS device (the one I have is called my cloud home) which is connected to my router via ethernet cable. The Plex server runs fine, however I am unable to successfully configure the remote access feature. My first attempt was through UPnP, which my router supports and was turned on. The NAS device's IP address appeared under the UPnP portmap table, and from what I have read online, this should have allowed for remote access on Plex. However this did not work. I then turned off UPnP and tried manually port forwarding the device. This did not work either. I have researched this issue for some time and have not found a solution that was successful. Any help would be appreciated.

   Firmware version?  Connected to what?

Many things are.  Western Digital?  An actual model number would make
for a more useful description.  (One of us might want to find the
relevant documentation for it.)

> [...] I am unable to successfully configure the remote access feature.
> [...] this did not work. [...] tried manually port forwarding [...]

None of "unable" or "did not work" or "tried" is a useful problem
description.  It does not say what you did.  It does not say what
happened when you did it.  As usual, showing actual actions (commands)
with their actual results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be
more helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

Whether the configuration is automatic (UPnP) or manual (port
forwarding), many of the potential problems are similar.  For the usual
problems with port forwarding, see:

If more advice is desired, then adding some actual IP addresses and
error messages to your description might help.  If you're worried about
revealing secrets (like, say, a public IP address), then the top half of
the address, "a.b" out of "a.b.c.d", would satisfy most of my curiosity.
Or, plug that address into the form at: https://whois.arin.net/ , and
see if it is a public or private address.

Re: Configuring Plex Remote Access with NAS device

   V1.1.0.34_1.0.1

Connected to SB5101 SURFboard Cable Modem

Western Digital?

   Yes. Model number is WDBVXC0040HWT

I did not receive any error messages on my router while attempting to configure UPnP or port forwarding. When I say nothing worked, what I mean is when I pressed retry on plex remote access, it gave me the same message "Not available outside your network". So both configurations I did on my router were unsucessful, whether it was via UPnP or port forwarding.

When UPnP is turned on, the portmap table displays this:

ActiveProtocolInt. PortExt. PortIP Address
YESTCP44349592192.168.c.d
YESTCP3240026176192.168.c.d

When configuring port forwarding, I created a custom port:

   Service Type: TCP

External Port Range: (wasn't sure what to put here, so I tried both 49592 and 26176)

   Internal Port Range: 32400-32400

Internal IP address: 192.168.c.d (NAS device)

I also added the IP of the NAS device under address reservation via LAN setup.

   IP addresses:

   Router: 192.168.c.d

NAS device (my cloud home): 192.168.c.d (private) 70.171.198.162 (public as displayed on plex)
