N600 - C3700 Speed issue

Spectrum upgraded my internet service from 60 mbps to 200 mbps.   I checked the speed with an ethernet cable and it was only 90 mbps while WIFI was only 50 mbps.  I reset wireless router back to factory settings. I reset the settings to my preferred ones.  Nothing changed.  My neighbor's laptop got the same speed results on my modem.  I took my laptop to my neighbor's house where he has Spectrum 200 mbps.  I got 233 mbps on WIFI.

What is the problem I need to correct?

Basically your laptop in conjunction with an older N600 wifi devices is whats limiting your speed. You'd get faster speeds with a better laptop or with an upgraded modem/router. Or both.

Re: N600 - C3700 Speed issue

good question.

1. Do you have a screen snip of your modem connections page?

2. have you checked your ethernet cable? Make sure its either cat 5e, cat 6, or greater. Regular cat 5 only supports 10/100mbps fast ethernet. Try a different ethernet cable.

3. have you checked the device you're testing with to make sure it has a gigabit connection?

4. If you had any qos or traffic management settings running, I'd try factory resetting and re-installing the modem/router. sometimes these settings get retained even when they're turned off.

The main goal is to first get your hardwired connection to the C3700 to full speeds. Once we've got that up to full speed, then we look at wireless. Reason why is the things that impact wireless performance are much more broad and could be environment, house, interference, etc. lets focus on getting the modem functioning properly first.

Re: N600 - C3700 Speed issue

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 series 15 5567 which has Ethernet 10/100 Mbps Ethernet controller integrated on system board Wireless.  The WiFi 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2 • WiFi 802.11b/g/n + Bluetooth 4.0.  The cable is a CAT6.

At my neighbors is was able to get a WIFI speed of 233 mbps on a Spectrum modem which is 200 mbps.

A. we don't know what spectrum router your neighbor is using so you can't compare wireless speeds. You've got a AC wireless card in your laptop but you don't say which one, I'll go into more later.

B. The N600 router isn't going to saturate a 200mbps connection. the rough rule of thumb (again, rough) is a 55% throughput speed in comparison to link rate. A N600 device is going to connect at maximum 300mbps/band. that's a max throughput of 165mbps. Again, roughly. And that's not saying the wifi card you're using is a 2x2 antenna card or 1x1. Intel has both with those specs. A chipset model would tell us but not the specs you posted. If you're a 1x1 antenna setup then your maximum wifi speed (roughly) is 83mbps over wireless on a N600 device.

C. your ethernet controller is a fast controller which means its speeds are 10/100mbps. That's not going to max out your connection either. roughly 90-95mbps max.

I'd try borrowing a laptop with a gigabit connection and seeing if the modem/router is getting full speeds. Your connections look good by the modem pages but the device you're testing with and the wireless technology in use is going to be the limiting factors.

Sorry, it can saturate the 200mbps connection but over a hardwired connection.

In that case your Dell is never going to get speeds faster than 100 Mbps. Your Internet is faster than your PC.

Re: N600 - C3700 Speed issue

Which is a 1x1 antenna configuration.

The C3700 is a N600 in 2x2 antenna configuration. Your max connection over 5ghz is going to be 150mbps. That's your connected speeds, not your throughput.
