R6300v2 firmware not updating
My R6300v2 router is not updating at all. It is showing Firmware Version V1.0.3.6_1.0.63CH. I have already downloaded the newest update on my PC, however when i try to browse for the file and open it up it keeps giving me an error. I tried to check for an update but it said there was no updates available. What am I doing wrong? My download speed is over 220 and my upload peed is only at 0.5. I called my provider and they said I needed to update my router. Please help because my internet is going so slow. It took almost 20 minutes just to load the Youtube home screen. I feel like I have tried everything.

Connected to what?

Which was?

Was there a message associated with this "an error"? Use your words.
> [...] My download speed is over 220 and my upload peed is only at 0.5.

"220" _what_? "0.5" _what_?

That might be true, but some actual evidence might be nice. If you
haven't changed the router firmware, and it worked properly at some time
in the past, then why assume that the same firmware is now the cause of
your (new) problem?
Have you tried connecting a computer directly to your modem (assuming
that you have a modem)?
> [...] I feel like I have tried everything.
You're wrong. For example, did you try a Web search for, say,
"V1.0.3.6_1.0.63CH"?

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
I have never done this before. I called my internet provider (Spectrum) because my internet has been very slow since I moved a couple of months ago. They are the ones that told me that my router needs to be updated. its running at 220 mbps for download and 0.5 mbps for upload. I thought that was obvious... I have no idea what I am doing hence why I followed all of the instructions I could find. I did everything it said to do yet it still didn't work. I don't understand why. I am not tech savvy when it comes to routers and modems.

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
As for the error message it literally says Firmware is incorrect. I am trying to update from V1.0.3.6_1.0.63CH to Firmware Version 1.0.4.36. I have downloaded the file for that firmware version and it still wont update.

Do you think that your router firmware got broken in the move?
> [...] They are the ones that told me that my router needs to be

The technical term for this is "blame shifting".
> [...] its running at 220 mbps for download and 0.5 mbps for upload.

And the speeds which you expected are ...?
(Note: "m" = "milli" = 1/1000. "M" = "mega" = 1000000.)
> [...] I don't understand why. [...]
As explained elsewhere, your router was loaded with ISP-specific
firmware (for "CHarter"), and it can't easily be loaded with (newer)
generic firmware. Dealing with this would be especially difficult for
one who is "not tech savvy when it comes to routers and modems."
Whether different router firmware would help with your actual problem
is unknown.
> [...] I followed all of the instructions I could find [...]
You didn't answer many of my questions. Look for "?", above.
Prominent among them:
> Connected to what?
Do you have a modem of some type? Is it the same one as you used
before the move?
> Have you tried connecting a computer directly to your modem (assuming
> that you have a modem)?
Blame assignment is Job One. Why fiddle with the router if the
problem is with the modem?

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
1.) No, it did not get broken in the move. We take special care of all of our electronic devices and other valuable items.
2.) I am not "blame shifting" at all. I called them because I thought it was a problem with my service. They informed me that the modem and service were fine and then informed me that my router very well may need an update.
3.) I don't know anything about internet speed so I dont exactly know how to answer that question. The gentleman I spoke to on the phone said my upload speed should be at 10 mbps (again I don't know if it's milli or mega in this case.)
4.) As for the "ISP- specific firmware" I have no clue what that means.
5.) My router is connected to my modem if that's what you mean.
6.) Yes I have a modem (as stated in number 5). My router is connected to said modem and no I have not tried to connect my computer to my modem because the modem does not have the extra ethernet port. My routers ethernet is connected to my TV.
7.) There are no problems with my modem as stated above, according to my internet provider.
Does this answer all of your questions?

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
Hello - I am also running firmware version V1.0.3.6_1.0.63CH
Wanted to be sure I was current for any vulnerabilities, so . . .
Download R6300v2-V1.0.4.36_10.0.93.chk from netgear.com
Went into the Administration utility, selected this file, uploaded, and received the message:
The firmware file is incorrect please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product
I verified that the model is indeed R6300V2 (AC1750) - both on the admin interface and the sticker on the router.
Tried downloading and extracting again – same issue.
In the Firmware upgrade screen selected the Check button, which indicated that:
No new firmware version available.
Question: Do I believe this statement, or continue to try to find a way to update to what appears to be a newer version?
Replied here as it appears to be the same issue . . .

I asked about the firmware, not the whole router, but you might get
my point.

I wasn't trying to suggest that _you_ were.
> [...] They informed me that the modem and service were fine and then

In other words, "It's not our fault; it must be your router." That'd
be the same router which was working just fine before the move. Think
about it.
> [...] The gentleman I spoke to on the phone said my upload speed

"M" would make more sense. 10Mb/s might be reasonable.
> 4.) As for the "ISP- specific firmware" I have no clue what that means.
It means specific to a particular ISP. In this case, Charter
Communications (https://www.spectrum.net). Presumably, your router was
provided to someone) by Charter. How you got it is irrelevant.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_service_provider
> 5.) My router is connected to my modem if that's what you mean.
Thanks for the detailed description of that device. Has it a maker
and model number?
> Do you have a modem of some type? Is it the same one as you used
> before the move?
See the second question? Here's another one: Same ISP, or different?
> [...] I have not tried to connect my computer to my modem because the
> modem does not have the extra ethernet port. [...]
For test purposes, you have my permission to disconnect whatever is
connected to your (unspecified) modem, and connect a computer there. If
that solves your speed problem, then you might legitimately worry about
the router. If it doesn't, then the (now disconnected) router is not
the source of your speed problem.
> 7.) There are no problems with my modem as stated above, according to my
> internet provider.
Trust no one, I always say. That's why we run the experiment.

The firmware-update part is the same. Starting your own thread would
still make more sense. Did you read the explanation here (and follow
the links) for that question?

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
Alysonia,
It took me a while to get up the nerve to attempt the below procedure as any failure could easily result in a bricked/unusable router. But since it was successful I thought I would share with you in case you're still looking and willing to take that risk.
I used the following procedure specifically to remove the CH (charter) version and revert back to V1.0.3.22_10.0.67 – same version, but no longer Charter. From this I could then upgrade to the latest version from Netgear. If you’re looking to do something different you will need to modify these instructions for your purposes. Again, this worked for me, but may not for you for any number of reasons. Good luck.
1. Manually Backup your router settings - write them down
2. Flash the new firmware dd-wrt.K3_R6300V2CH.chk (can now be found here https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/download.php?id=42538&sid=417bea094969968cd6a3c07c50635a51)
3. This will change the firmware to V1.0.3.22_10.0.67, which is no longer Charter
4. NOTE: The router interface will change drastically. See here for more details on dd-wrt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT
5. You will need to navigate to flash the new updated firmware; On the Administration tab there is a FirmWare Upgrde tab
6. Flash the new firmware with the latest version from Netgear – currently R6300v2-V1.0.4.36_10.0.93
6. Wait till the router is fully flashed and restarted.
7. Factory reset your router.

Re: R6300v2 firmware not updating
This was exactly what I was looking for. Followed the instructions and was able to update the firmware to the latest version 1.0.4.50
Thanks
