Upgraded my wifi from 500 to 1 gig and my wifi speed is all over the place, one time its 500-600 other times 100-200. Getting consistent 600+ on ethernet. Was told my router was the issue ac2600 rx450 so i bought a ax1800 wifi 6 wax204 and seems like it got worse on wifi. I was told the 6 should support gig internet. Not sure where im going wrong here if i have settings that aren’t right or what. On ethernet its consistent
Some background reading on your part will help you better understand Wi-Fi and throughput capacity.
Here is a link to a great reference document: https://www.duckware.com/tech/wifi-in-the-us.html
Recommend you start off with chapters 3 and 11.
When you are testing throughput capacity, recommend you use the installable stand alone Ookla application available in the play store. This program removes the web browser from being included in the data path.

Re: Wifi router help
As the referenced article points out, WiFi6 has a theoretical maximum bandwidth that is close to 1GB/sec, provided that the device being used to measure speed is capable of WiFi6 and 2x2 MIMO. and is very close to the router.
It would help to know:
- what device is being used to measure internet speed
- how far it is from the router

What model router do you have? Is this a Orbi router or RAX series router?

RX450 is not valid and AX1800 is a wifi speed. Not a model #

Both routers are listed in the original post
There is no such router as a rx450 and the wax204 is a wired access point, not a router.
Please look at the label on the router for the model number.
What is the brand name and model number of the modem connected upstream between your router and the internet?

I didn’t realize i mis typed its a r7450. I use spectrum internet so it’s whatever they supplied im not at home right now to look. I get 600-800 download at both the modem and via ethernet off the router/access point. Just seems like it shouldn’t be so inconsistent on wifi if it’s staying steady on Ethernet.
Wi-Fi can vary depending on the radio frequency environment where you are located. Do you have relatively close by neighbors that also have Wi-Fi devices broadcasting?
If your two Wi-Fi devices, R7450 and WAX204 are within a few feet of each other, they can interfere. The interference also depends on what channels they are broadcasting on. The 2.4 GHz band has channel numbers as does the 5 GHz band. Do you have the SSIDs set the same on both devices?
If the Spectrum device is a combination modem/router, it can throw a third Wi-Fi device within range and complicate troubleshooting.

Re: Wifi router help
Im doing all testing on the 5gh. Odly enough the 2.4 band stays pretty consistent at 100-120 mbps never really changes.

Not running them at same time, the modem is just direct no wifi.
What does that mean?
You aren't using the wifi or you have "bridged" it and disabled the router section?
Turning off the wifi does not achieve that.
Did you see the question from @Kitsap ?
What is the brand name and model number of the modem connected upstream between your router and the internet?

Re: Wifi router help
The modem itself doesn’t broadcast wifi
Im not running both routers at the same time, when I bought the wifi6 one I removed my original r7450. I am now back using it as the wifi6 one was not working well very slow speeds so it’s currently unhooked/unplugged

This message has really muddied the water with respect to your hardware and configuration.
The WAX204 is not a router. It is a wired access point. If you had it directly connected to your Spectrum modem without the R7450 you are lucky to see any internet access at all.
When you get home, start fresh with a fresh description of what is connected to what. Begin with the brand name and model number of the Spectrum modem and work from there. Use the device model numbers, not generic terms.
When you had both your R7450 and WAX 204 connected, how far apart were they physically?

And everything i read is wax204 can be both router or a access point

The information on the web link you provided is in error. The WAX204 is an access point only and cannot perform any routing functions.
The hardware you have mentioned, Spectrum modem and Netgear R7450 router will have to be connected via an Ethernet cable to form a local network. The WAX204 access point will have to be connected to the R7450 router via an Ethernet cable and physically located a minimum of a 15 feet away from the R7450 to avoid Wi-Fi interference. The WAX204 will provide a second transmitter point for Wi-Fi and also provide the newer Wi-Fi 6 connections the R7450 cannot provide.
This article provides a somewhat better description of the modem, router, and access point functions.

Still need a model number for your Spectrum modem. That could still provide a new twist.

Re: Wifi router help
Page 22 of the User Manual is pretty specific:
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WAX204/WAX204_UM_EN.pdf
The WAX204 is designed primarily to function as an access point, but can operate as a
lightweight SOHO router with support for a PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, or IPv6 Internet
connection.

Re: Wifi router help
Modem is en2251 made by hitron technologies but branded by spectrum. From that is Ethernet cable to the R7450 router. Even with the WAX204 connected directly to my modem ( r7450 not being used)it put out both 2.4 and 5 wifi connections which seemed to work just fine was just slower than the r7450. All my devices worked, i was just seeing slower speeds vs the r7450
I guess in the end, is there something better than the 7450 I currently have that will get me faster/more consistent wifi speeds, I only have 1 device that runs direct Ethernet cable. And i have a few that only run on 2.4 so I need something that offers both 2.4&5ghz
I just dont want to pay extra for 1gig internet if i can really only utilize 500mb i had before

I stand corrected and am going to step away from this conversation. I am sure @CrimpOn will carry on from here.
Good luck.

Re: Wifi router help
The Product Data Sheet clearly claims a throughput of 1,200Mbps on 5G (implied 802.11ax and 2x2 MIMO)
The iPhone 14 should be able to achieve this speed:
-
I have no clue why it doesn't.

Re: Wifi router help
Does your wifi client get speeds a lot faster on other wifi sources?
Is the speed so slow that it stops you from doing things? Or are you just racking up numbers on a test site?
Most people would be wildly happy with the wifi speeds that you get.
