Re: Stora drive compatibility list
Shouldn't this thread be sticky?
Is this a list of drives that work with out any kind of performance issues or a list that will just function? I ask because I am afraid that the newest drives might do just that. (They work but not optimally)
Thanks

Re: Stora drive compatibility list
Sticky - agreed, however mere mortals don't have the ability to set a sticky.
Performance - obviously the list (like Netgear's own list) is what has been tested/verified to work. With newer SATA 3 drives which are capable of 6Gbps throughput, obviously Stora is not going to be able to make use of that. However, you do need to consider that the capability of the drive is not the limiting factor. Most people here are benchmarking in the 20 to 30 MB/s range with some going as high as 75MB/s through FTP under optimal conditions. Now that's only 600 Mb/s (0.6 Gb/s) which is far from 3 Gb/s capability of SATA 2 drives.
Further, if you run any standard benchmark packages you'd find at the high end maybe you get 200MB/s throughput to your disk - again, not even close to 3Gb/s. Some of the very high-end SSD drives that are SATA 3 are just recently breaking 3Gb/s (again under optimal conditions) but still not close to 6Gb/s.
So, bottom line, in a NAS environment like this I wouldn't be concerned that you're not pushing the drive to the theoretical limit of its ability.

I've posted an updated list, however, board moderator felt a need to reject it so I will no longer waste my time maintaining or periodically posting it.

Thanks Howard for posting this user guide to Stora's acceptable drives.
Makes absolutely no sense why we sticky useless items like I love my Stora, Stora Reviews in the Press, Stora 2.5 update available (a bit behind, we're on 2.5.1), and even Stora Information when this is a user forum that provides useful user information, not brochure topics.
Again Thanks Howard, your posts have cleared up much disinformation.

Re: Stora drive compatibility list
Thanks - I always thought it was useful and of value since it is more up to date than Netgear's list. Further, since I have been on a drive-buying rampage for the past 6 months, as I picked up new drives first thing I'd do was pop them into the Stora.
Anyhow, will repost here in the event the almighty doesn't remove it again.

I usually let Netgear manage their forum, but since I've been given privileges... here you go. Also took down the Netgear 2.5 update sticky as requested 😉

I can confirm the 2TB Western Digital WD20EARX drives work fine. Put two in my Stora configured to RAID 1 and they are working perfectly.

Using two Hitachi HUA721010KLA330 1TB drives with no problems. These are Ultrastar drives intended for enterprise applications and built to last. They are not cheapo desktop drives.
Any information on Advanced Format (4k sector) drives? Are these compatible with the Stora? Ta.

Re: Stora drive compatibility list
MikeyT thanks for the drive ifno, I'll include in next update.
4k sectors - no problem. I've been using the WD10EARS which is 4k sector and Stora has handled it without issue from day one.
clubt - no 3TB. Word is it will probably be supported, but clearly not a high priority. Additionally the necessity is questionable (as mentioned by others). You can stuff a Stora with 4TB for less than $100 for the bare Stora and maybe $80 each for 2TB drives. If you need to go above 4TB you could always buy another Stora and more 1TB to 2TB drives. Alternatively you might begin looking to higher end units like ReadyNAS which can take 3 or more drives. I haven't searched around lately, but I don't think there are many NAS vendors supporting the drives over 2TB at this time.

I'm thinking of upgrading to 2tb drives soon as my 1tb drives are 80% full.
I'll be looking for posts on experience with the newer 3tb models coming out. I'm sure to be upgrading to those one day in the future.

is it possible to use two different HDs (i.e. from two different manufacturers) in the stora as long as they are the same capacity ? It's proving very difficult to get any HDs at the moment. Amazon have customer quotas on theirs

cambo - no issue whatsoever using different drives, they can even be very different with one being 7200 RPM and the other 5900 RPM. Different manufactures/models no problem.

Care in the above 3TB "compatible" drives. They dont work as standard Spud had to
So dont just chuck in 3TB drives and expect it to work.

I had to back door the device and make a few changes to the configuration for it to work. I had to manually create the raid and redo the partitions on the Stora
So dont just chuck in 3TB drives and expect it to work.
